Hi Chris and welcome to TOC. Our usual technical experts all seem to be at work/sleeping work off/away for the Bank Holiday. Have a look at Anchorman's description of an oil change on a 4.3 at the following link:

http://toyotaownersclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=81467 ( if the link dosen't work, go back to the index for the forum and look at the Technical bits that are listed in the top box on that page. You will find the oil change instructions there along with a lot of other invaluable reading matter. Good luck and make sure you use a genuine Toyota filter - not sure if it applies to the 4.2 RAV but there is some sort of valve in the one on the 4.3 that is not in all the "pattern" filters made by other manufacturers.

Best regards

(another) Chris ( also originally from B'ham! )

Not sure if you have a petrol or diesel but no matter I have done both.

Diesel (2.0 D4D)

Remove the 6 bolts that hold the front cover. Three at the front;

and three at the side;

The filter is now exposed and easy to get at;

Clean the housing;

Lightly oil the sealing ring and fit the filter after a quick slurp of tea

After fitting the filter drain the sump into a suitable container;

Then add the 5W30 engine oil;

Petrol (VVTi)

There is no need to remove the plastic cover to access the filter;

Or the sump plug;

Enjoy!

If ye drap the enjun oot the bottom o the car aifter undoin the various bolts n haingers, n then raise the car aff the enjun, ye'll be able tae change the filter nae bother.

If yer cars ont 3 year auld, an ye canna afford tae pay a puir unemployed mechanic tae dae it fur ye, thus keepin the countrys economy (cash flow fur Fuj's' bennnnnefitt) gaein, then try swappin it fur an auld landrover waur ye'll nae dae ony harm!

No need to change the oil on a LR - just keep topping up what leeks out.

thanks anchorman for the excellent pics and information, mission accomplished, the filter that was on must have been applied with air pressure wrench nearly wrecked it getting it off, that tight is not necessay in my experience, excellent wry humour bothwell, like your style.

All the best Chris
