I put my 53 plate Rav4 in for an MOT last week and it sailed through easy. No problem!

£53 it cost me right enough for the bit of paper :o

Mine had it's 1st MOT a couple of months ago at a similar mileage and no problems.

Always worth a walk around the car day before the test just to make sure all bulbs are working (sods law and all that!)

Thanks to all who replied.

Passed with no problems today.

ATS quite efficient as an MOT garage.

Do I keep her for another year ?

VW Tiguan looks a nice car

Keep her and spend the money you will save in depreciation on a nice holiday!

RAV Depreciation £2000 + £500 Maintenance

Tiguan Depreciation £6000 + £250 Maintenance

RAV Chance of breakdown 5%

Tiguan Chance of Breakdown 10%

Leaving £3750 for a next break somewhere

Agree on some points.

No breakdowns as yet.

Depreciation on the RAV in the last 3 years £3000+ p.a.

I do tend to keep my cars,if I am happy with them.for 6 - 7 years.

But I do like the look of the Tiguan compared to the RAV 4.3.

Plus the cost of either the interest on a £14,000 odd loan - or the lost interest on £14,000 if you are fortunate enough to have the readys to hand.

Keep the RAV4 (but replace the Avatar  )

Mine passed today but at one stage the tester was revving it harder (while at a standstill) than I've ever revved it. What was that all about, please?

Is your RAV a Diesel ??....If so he was doing the smoke test...They rev the engine high 6 times to test the smoke.....part of the standard Smoke Test. You dont have to take this as my garage always ask if I want this done...

If it was a petrol...Then maybe the petrol guys will answer it for you......

Yes it's a diesel -I wasn't asked if I wanted it done and can't say that I'm overly happy about it being revved so much. But did I have a choice? If I'd refused wouldn't they have failed it? Hopefully no damage done

Thanks

You have a choice to get it done...They always say to give your car a good run before going in for an MOT......Make the engine nice and hot and the cat (if fitted) or in our case a nice run before hand.....then get there 5 minutes before the test so the car's still ticking when they do the test ;) ;) ;)

It passed so all's good for another year...

Chatman,

Please, can I kindly ask why you have added the Chinese for Toyota to your signature?

".....................丰田RAV4...................."

Correct me if I'm wrong, I know certain Chinese characters are used in one form of Japanese writing "Kanji" but I don't think I've seen any Japanese Toyota material use those Chinese characters.

Unless you are trying to tell us that your RAV is actually a Chinese Jonway UFO!:lol::lol:

A quick bit of extra info :D :

This is how the city of Toyota in Aichi is written in Japanese Kanji,

豊田市

See more here.

And here.

Re The Jonway UFO.......watch this space later this year...hopefully!:lol::lol:

The Jonway UFO is an unbelievably blatent clone of the RAV4.2 it is hard to believe it has been allowed to go on sale. Toyota have not objected at all, strangely :g:

Please wait a few seconds for Video to load!

With the reputation of Chinese-designed clone cars, I would prefer a late RAV4.2 over a Jonway UFO anyday  - RAV4 owners, Expect to see your badges disappear to be stuck on UFOs :(

I think this has been discussed before and we have come to the conclusion that Jonway is a partnership firm with Toyota for producing 4.2's in China, under a licence, probably with the old Toyota presses and equipment.

It is quite amazing just how many old European models are produced in partnership with local companies by the likes of VW and Citroen, in China and elsewhere.

Amazingly I read this week that the old Mark 1 VW Golf is still produced in South Africa!

yup - must be a business reason why they are not saying anything - IF it is made with Toyota QA involved, that could make it much more attractive. Still want to see crash test data before I got in one!!

They still make the original VW Bus (T3?) in Mexico in Van, Minibus and Camper formats, but with a newer engine.

I used Google translate and that's what it brought back in simplified Chinese.....

This used to be called an 'Italian Tune Up'!

The reason for this is to try to get the CO level reading down which is unlikely unless everything is nice and hot (with a higher mileage engine).

Testing mine today [pre-MoT], alas, it could not be reduced to 0.3% and stuck on 0.52% — the advice from the garage was to add injector cleaner to the last gallon in the tank and drive it flat out on the motorway as I take it in to the real test!

Found this on the honest john site

\"What is the feeling within the motor trade about the testing of diesels for the MOT? I object strongly to the engine being over-revved when I am careful not to do this while driving. As a professional driver who has to sit in traffic queues I am all in favour of exhaust tests, but is this current method for diesels really the best? Why is it not performed within the normal driving rev range?\"

Like all MOT emissions tests, the diesel test is a compromise between a proper laboratory test and what can be achieved in the average garage with equipment which costs the right side of £10,000. Why the diesel smoke test is particularly ludicrous is that revving the engine to the governor is likely to loosen the accumulated soot in the exhaust system and give a far worse reading for a vehicle which has been gently driven than one which has been hard driven. There is also the slight chance that revving to the governor may snap the timing belt - though, thankfully, incidences of this happening have been rare. To prepare for the diesel smoke test, use an injector cleaner such as Miller\'s \'DieselClean Plus\', take the car for a hard blast to blow the soot out of the exhaust, fill up with City Diesel if you can find it, or one of the other \'cleaner-burn\' diesel fuels if you can\'t, and remove the air filter immediately prior to the test.

I must say that I still think it is absurd to rev a car in a wya that the driver never does.
