Found this on the honest john site

\"What is the feeling within the motor trade about the testing of diesels for the MOT? I object strongly to the engine being over-revved when I am careful not to do this while driving. As a professional driver who has to sit in traffic queues I am all in favour of exhaust tests, but is this current method for diesels really the best? Why is it not performed within the normal driving rev range?\"

Like all MOT emissions tests, the diesel test is a compromise between a proper laboratory test and what can be achieved in the average garage with equipment which costs the right side of £10,000. Why the diesel smoke test is particularly ludicrous is that revving the engine to the governor is likely to loosen the accumulated soot in the exhaust system and give a far worse reading for a vehicle which has been gently driven than one which has been hard driven. There is also the slight chance that revving to the governor may snap the timing belt - though, thankfully, incidences of this happening have been rare. To prepare for the diesel smoke test, use an injector cleaner such as Miller\'s \'DieselClean Plus\', take the car for a hard blast to blow the soot out of the exhaust, fill up with City Diesel if you can find it, or one of the other \'cleaner-burn\' diesel fuels if you can\'t, and remove the air filter immediately prior to the test.

I must say that I still think it is absurd to rev a car in a wya that the driver never does.

I remember a grey import Pajero having this test where i worked, the whole site disappeared in black smoke  Happy days ;)

I was under the impression that they were already importing the UFO to Germany

Anyway, they were very rare in China, I think I seen one, amidst dozen's of genuine Toyota 4.2 and 4.3 RAVs, so they will be even rarer in Europe!:lol:
