Centre Floor Side Member Extensions!

Hi Folks,

When I bought my XT5 there was a small packet included with the documentation labelled "IMPORTANT. To pre-delivery inspector. Insert these rubber plugs into the holes of the centre floor side member extensions". Has anyone got any clues as to where these plugs might fit? I spent threequarters of an hour on Sunday with the RAV over the pit looking for likely holes to plug - all to no avail. There are two of these plugs which are intended for obloid holes 23mm wide x 38mm long. It looks as though they are meant for material about 9mm thick - so it's fairly unlikely to be metal! There are similar sized plugs in the inside of the sills. Any ideas ( which don't offend the moderators ) much appreciated.

Best regards

Chris :huh:

Any Ideas? TBH, my idea would be to go to dealer and ask the PDI inspector to put them in ;)

That's what I was thinking.

If they are IMPORTANT ( as it said on the packet ) then someone isn't doing their job properly. From the sound of things they won't take a minute to fit ( if you know where to put them ) so inconvenience the guy who should have done it in the first place !

I had the same on delivery of mine, and this is exactly what I did, although I did need to go back anyway, to finalise the transfer of my private plate.

Thanks Guys, I was just hoping to avoid a 60 mile round trip to the supplying dealer. It seemed that it could hardly be rocket science to fit them and I'm not totally confident that they would get fitted if I handed them to the dealer and asked him to fit them - probably end up in the bin!

sywy - did you see where the plugs were fitted?

PS - just found out that I have to go close to the dealers on Friday so if I can't get the info. any other way, I'll pop in and ask the service manager where they go.

If it's miles out of your way you could try ringing them and asking the guy who didn't get round to fitting them where they go . I'm pretty sure he'd like to resolve the issue without his boss finding out he only did half a job !!

Sorry, no I didn't. For all I know, they could have chucked them in the bin, as you suggested :D

Pretty sure these plugs are used to cover holes which are used to secure the Rav during shipping.

Also sure that they go where the side steps bolt on, which is why I didn't fit my plugs. Fitted the steps

instead. :rolleyes: There is a thread on Rav 4 world about this also.

As Dave says, when the car comes over on the boat it is secured to the deck by these 4 holes - 2 on each end of the sills. It should be the dealer that fits the plugs during the pdi but.................

You don't need the car over the pit, just kneel down at the side of the car and look just under the sill at the front and the back near to the wheel arches.

This is the front one;

.....and this is looking towards the rear at the back one;

They go with the smooth side up and as you can see from these photos, the holes are nicely in line with the wheels so the chassis rails may well be full of crud by now.

If anyone has the holes and no plugs, let me know as I have a spare set.

Regards

PS the car gets washed tomorrow and yes it gets done under there!

Thanks to everyone who replied here. THE OUTCOME: I've got a spare set of plugs too - the holes were already fitted with plugs and look as though it was done on the production line.

AM - are you collecting these plugs? If you went out and took those photo's last evening, I definitely owe you one. Now if Mr T had said "put the plugs in the holes in the cills" I would have been straight onto it. If the translation from "cills" in japanese ends up as "centre floor side member extensions", no wonder I get confused! Thanks again.

Chris :)

I guess the PDI centre at the docks (i think that is where they do some PDI work and fit lots of the accessories?) have bucket-loads of these kind of things, so use them rather then the little bags left in the car :)

It sure does look like they are important, as without them water must get inside those cills :(

Yes I went out last night just to sort it out! I will collect when you join us on the next expedition :cheers:

Hoovie. I think you are right. The car also comes ashore with 2 towing eyes fitted for shipping. One goes in the car and the other back on the Pride of Nippon for another day!
