Alternator ?

hi just brought a st185 gt4 and was ok... now not charging ?? the person i got it off said its had a new alt and it looks new to me also theres a extra earth wire from alt to batt been put in at some point ?? maybe earth probs ?? can anyone help me out here as iam not sure where to start as iam new to these cars.... any help would be great...many thanks kev..

are you getting any warning lights? when the altonator doesn't charge there's two which light up, the CAT warning light and another, can't remember which. if your not getting these then you have a differant issue.

do you have an alarm or immobiliser?

yes theres 2 lights on... the Battery light and an ! mark light and i do have an alarm and imobalizer ??

it sounds like your altonator is gubbed mate, another way to check is to get the engine running and test the voltage at the Battery, with the engine running yoou should read about 13 volts

are you sure as it is ment to have had a new alternator ?

all i'm saying is that is what it sounds like you need one but after thinking about it the lights should have been the Battery light and CAT warning light to show a gubbed altonator.

have you tried charging the Battery from a power pack? or mains charger?

reason i was asking you if you had an alarm or immobiliser is that they can be the cause of many electrial problems, so that could be a route of investigation

ok i fully charged the Battery from a mains charger put it back on car fired it up and the Battery light and warning light wasent on.. so i reved car after a few seconds and it came back on again.would a dud Battery cause the light to come on ? or any other sugestions what it could be or what i can check ? many thanks
