I have been told that the whirrying noise coming from my clutch is causd by the clutch release bearing drying out, can anyone tell me how long until it fails or what will need replacing. Thanks

I aint no expert, Anchorman will better advise, but it will probably go for years. If not, its a big job to replace it, a lot of

labour involved. Anyway welcome to TOC, its best if you update your signature to show model, year, petrol or diesel.

Makes it easier for members to advise you

I'm not sure that drying out is the right term. Release bearings do sometimes fail and the tend to make a whirring noise when you ease pressure onto the pedal. If there is some rattling or rumbling when the pedal is released that is normal backlash in the gears.

To change the bearing is a big job and you would be unwise not to have a new clutch at the same time. There is a thread here somewhere that suggests that £700+VAT has been quoted.

As Dave says it could last a long time. If it doesn't seem to be getting any worse then leave it. If it fails all together you will have to be recovered but you should be able to tell if it is in decline.

Monitor it for a while and see how you go on.
