Avensis 1.8 Vvti....cam Belt Or Cam Chain?

Hello folks

I have just bought a 2001 Toyota Avensis Vermont 1.8vvti with 75ooo miles. does ths car have a cam belt or a cam chain? I believe a chain shouldn't need to be replaced, but what about intervals for a cam belt? Obviously I hope it is a chain! And while I'm here.......on acceleration there is an occasional "tappety" sound from the engine. Any suggestions?

Many thanks

Chris

It's a chain, and as for the tappety sound check the oil, the 1.8VVTi's are notorious for getting through oil, originals and subsequent replacement engines have had to be replaced so make sure you keep on eye on it.

yea definatly keep your eye on that oil consumption, toyota still cover these engines for high oil consumption under extended warranty because of the high volume of them. take your car in to a toyota dealer and ask for a oil consumption check, its free, the toyota specification for the amount of oil used should be 1 litre of oil for every 600-700 hundred milesand service history is must. The timing chain on these engines should be changed at 100,000 miles sccording to toyota service specs but i never known one to be replaced at that mileage its very rare for them to be changed.

Have to slightly disagree with you there. Just had a short motor put in mine (absolutely free of charge) and they were working on a consumption of 1 litre of oil in 1000 miles. Provided you have service history, Toyota will cover it under warranty as it is a known design fault. Take a look at this link.

Folks, thank you for your replies. I've never owned a Toyota before so this is all very useful information for me. It's great news that there appears to be a wealth of information here for a total novice like myself.

Kind Regards

Chris
