My radio/cd has died on my 2001 avensis. the trip computer is working ok but no audio. i was thinking of replacing with a complete second hand toyota unit from a similar year that has sat nav on it. is it likely to work ok even if it is a different model with sat nav fitted??

cheers

As far as I know, the radio/cd unit is the same. The ones without sat nav still have the satnav labels on the buttons but just don't work. The satnav unit is an optional extra added on in the boot.

Thanks QS

Your reply is greatly appreciated. I've just bought a second hand complete unit including the fascia and heater buttons etc. but haven't had it fitted yet so I sincerely hope it works. I'm totally lost without my music!! Is this a procedure that I should leave to a professional or should I attempt it myself??? I'm not a tech person in any sense!!

Regards

Chris

Go for it, it’s easy!

You don’t have to be really techy, just take it is easy and methodically and you’ll be fine. I’ve done it a couple of times on mine.

Apparently all the stereo bits are in the bottom unit (the bit where you put your tape or CD), the top bit is just the display for the trip computer / sat nav / radio.

I’d just try replacing it that first. To take it out, remove your ash tray and then grab a hold of the fascia at the bottom and pull it out. It should pull out by about 1/2 an inch. Run your fingers around the outside of the fascia so it’s all out by about the same, then lift up the entire unit towards the windscreen to release the clips. Once you have done this the only thing holding it all in will be the cables which all just plug in at the back.

Any problems just give a shout.
