Cooling Problem?

Hey all

I have a 96 Surf SSR-X 3.0, i have noticed when i drive it, there is alot of fluctuation in the temp gauge.1

When driving around town, the temperature barely even registers till around 8-10mins of driving (even then it is not even a 1/3 of the way up the gauge).

Then when on the highway the temp will go up but not very high maybe a 1/3 of the way up the gague and then drops off again when i get off the highway to driving around town.

I have repalced the radiator cap, hasn't really changed much.

So i assume it is not holding pressure, Why? or is the thermostat or water pump on it's way out?

If anyone can adivse or give an opinion please do.

chris.

Change the thermostat and make sure both heaters are on, then make sure that you have no air locks in the system, also you might want to check the viscous fan is working ok.

Thanks Andy, problem solved.

Yeah it was the thermostat, she was jammed open.

Just another thing what is the ECT PWR and what does it do? drive with it on all the time or leave it off?

and should I be driving with O/D on or off?

ECT PWR holds the gears a bit longer, ok for when towing or going up very long hills when you need more power, leave it off and overdrive on for normal driving, ie no lights on the dash.
