Hi All

I am new to this site and I joined as I am about to buy a RAV 4 tomorrow. B)

My question is probably been asked 100`s of time.

My choice is between a 2001 VX Auto and a 2002 GX Auto. what are the expected MPG and which would be a better buy for other reasons ?

Thanks for your expected replies.

Sorry, can't help on fuel consumption for autos, but would say that Toyota reliability is legendary. Hopefully, not to be proved wrong, would wish/expect you will have many years happy motoring. Welcome to the club. We all try to help each other out especially when we have certain issues.

Regards ;)

Hi Gunner and welcome to TOC, have a look at threads by a member called Bitman. He has live MPG figures for both his auto Ravs

in his signature.

No idea about about mpg, but isn't the VX the top of the range model, and GX the base model?

Yes the VX has leather seats/trim and CD Autochanger. the GX cloth seats and single cd.

Both of these on offer to me are petrol, I can have the VX,1owner, with fsh and 61k with cash back

or the GX,1 owner, with fsh and 31k with cash back, what a decision to make!!!

Still interested in the MPG as I only have a pension income. :(

the Petrol RAV is not an economy car - if ultimate fuel economy is important, then it is not the right car for you. If around 30MPG is acceptable, then go ahead and buy

I have a Diahatsu Terios 1.5 SE Auto 2006 at the moment which returns 26-30 on the onboard computer in combined runs and 36-40 on more long distance runs mixing motorway/dual carriageway. If the Rav does similar then this should be good

I would have thought the Terios would be a little better then that actually.

I would say I get similar to your figures on my (manual) RAV4.

I am basing my figures on manual calculation on tank fill-ups. the OBC is not very accurate on the typical RAV4 - I try and aim for an Computer MPG average of 40 MPG which I am satisified enough with as that relates to a real life average of aorund 32-33MPG.

If you found any posts by bitman and checked his sig, you will see he is getting - on both his Auto RAVs - better then that, so it seems there is not much of a penalty with the auto box.

As far as the two cars are concerned, the 2001 VX - if it is a pre April 2001 car, then that has the added advantage of not being subject to the hikes in Road Fund Licence duty, which could be a £200 a year saving I think?

Apart from that, IMHO, I would go for the vehicle in the best condition and not worry overly about the mileage and age difference betwen the two, as you have no knowledge of how badly or well either car was treated. Now they are 6 and 7 years old, general condition is your best guideline. If both cars are equally nice condition, I think I would personally go for the VX for the extra goodies.

Hi Hoovie

Thanks for your input here, the VX is the older car 09/09/2001 so I wont save on tax and the other is 02.

Both have a comprehensive full Toyota dealer service history, the GX has a tow bar so perhaps there is a reason not to have that one.

I have a 2004 xt3 petrol auto and I average 29.5 mpg driving hard around town I can get it as low as 22.5 driving carefully on the motorway I can get 37.5 maybe more on a long motorway run but I dont know as I havent done one yet. The on board computer is 20% out , it tells me I'm getting 37.5 when I'm actually getting 30 based on miles done and what fuel I'm putting in it. So far I have done 5500 miles in just over 3 months and its been a lovely car to drive. Given that my previous car was a 2001 Jaguar XJR I was expecting to be very disappointed with the Rav but I have been pleasently surprised. To make it even better it sailed through its MOT last week which was paid for by the garage I bought it from at the end of May as they said I may as well get it MOT'd at their cost when it needed it so I would get 15 mths MOT from them.

If economy is your biggest issue then buy Diesel. From my 2004 D4D XT4, I am getting an average combined MPG of 42 (although the trip computer claims it's 45mpg). If I keep my speed to around 56-60 mph on motorways I get 50 mpg!! So despite the fact that petrol is cheaper than diesel this still works out cheaper.

Not only is my trip computer exagerating my MPG, so is my speedomoter when compared to SATNAV. I wonder if these two are related...

My computer is out by about 17% to 25% each fill-up. The Speedo reads high by aorund 10% compared to speed readout out SatNav. I *think*they are not related, as diferent - but poor - accuracy on both.

Have you ever checked the odometer miles for accuracy, btw? I've been meaning to but never got round to it.

Yes I think it overreads by about 5%... which means my second hand 05 Rav bought with 50000 on the clock for £9000 had in fact only done 47500!

If you are deciding between a 2001 VX and 2002 GX, then a 2006 or newer T180 is unlikely to be on your radar.

I also do not think (someone correct me if I'm wrong) that the Auto box is currently available on any Diesel RAV4s, so Petrol is the one option here (Assuming Auto is a must have as you are looking at Autos and currently drive an Auto)
