Excessive (?) Oil Consumption On 1.8 Vvi Petrol T3x

Hi,

Over the last 10,000 miles my 2004 1.8 vvi petrol T3X Avensis has required 4 litres of oil. The engine has done 97,000 (mainly motorway) and has been regularly serivced my a Toyota dealer from new.

I am concerned this consumption ma damage the Cat. Is this consumption excessive, or to be expected for an engine of this mileage?

Less than 0.5L/1000 Miles is by no means excessive (Toyotas definition is over twice what you're experiencing)

Shouldn't do any damage

It has nothing to do with the fact that the car has done 97k, Toyotas of old used to do twice that before using a drop. It's a well documented design flaw with the VVTi engines that a lot of them burn oil but I think it has to be 1 litre for every 1000 miles before Toyota will replace the engine.

I am not sure when Toyota rectified the problem in production, yours may be before or it may be after the new piston design. Just had a short motor fitted to mine (1.8vvti Avensis GS 2002) after 60,000 miles, free of charge by Mr T. Maybe someone here knows the years that the faulty units were built.

Your oil consumption is not normal by any means, a newly serviced 1.8vvti with new oil filter only holds around 4ltrs of oil. !.8ltr engine has well known engine oil consumption fault known by Toyota. Wait for more postings, this is a well trodden posting.

Thanks for the advise.

If the problem is linked to oil contol rings becoming clogged/blocked, has anyone tried controlling the oil use with flusing additives?

hello

the problem is with PISTON OVERHEATING and not in oil scraper rings and that brings to oil drain holes clogging resulting oil is sucted upwards of combustion chamber. the problem could be rectified by MrT by means of pistons cooling system installing (oil heat exchanger + four oil jet nozzles to direct an oil jet on to each piston head. another sub problem is with quality of petrol burnt. i suffer from the same problem during two years and only apply ROIL conditioner liquified containing some solvents in this formula -- these solvents do melt this clogging with satisfactory result (as per mine observations). I've been using 1.1 ltr/10k kms but after three treatments the oil consumption has dropped up to 0.6 ltr/10k kms -- it looks good but no chance to reduce more, i feel.

for sure this engine has been designed with a huge designed mistake with no oil cooler availability.

the above is real fact.

cheers/Igor
