I need some help.. I have an 85 Camry with 275,000 Miles. I can't seem to get good fuel mileage. I average about 20-21 MPG with 75% highway. I usually drive 65-70 mph. Tires are at proper psi. Car is completely tuned up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor etc) The car runs great and has pretty good power. I installed a new O2 Sensor (Borg/Werner) about 8,000 miles ago and my check engine light comes on often always giving me the 02 Sensor code. It only comes on on the highway while at constant speed. I have checked the sensor many times it's on properly with no air leaking. Anyone have any ideas?

Which engine is it?

My dad has a 97 Camry V6 which does about 25MPG, so considering the age of yours I wouldnt have thougt that the low 20's were that bad considering.

1st Gen Camry's only had 2 engines. Mine is the 2.0 liter I-4 there was also a diesel 1.8 liter I-4. 25 is about right for a V6.. According to www.fueleconomy.gov when mine was new it got 30 city and 32 highway.

The fuel economy tests were done a lot different years ago to what they are now, that's why a brochure for the early CarinaE's show much better fuel economy that the later ones because they found ways of making them more accurate.

I was having a chat with a friend who has a 1990 CarinaII 1.6 auto and he is getting around 28 MPG.
