Trip Computer On Stock Head Unit

Hi all,

New to the forum, although i have been lurking around on it for answers over the last year.

I have owned a Celica T-Sport 52 plate for a year now, and have recently become intrigued with the button on the head unit which is called Trip/Navi.

I recently went into a friends Yaris, and saw the button changed the screen to a mpg guage and average speed indicator etc. On my car nothing happens when i press the button, so i was wondering if this is because the feature isn't installed on my car, or perhaps someone might have taken the standard head unit out at one point and not replaced the cables right.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

That button does nothing unless you hve the TNS sat nav fitted to your car.

Thanks for that info.

How easy is it to get hold of the TNS system? Would i have to go directly to Toyota? And would it be likely to cost me an arm and an leg?

The Trip/Navi button DOES do something without having the TNS Sat Nav fitted - it provides generally inaccurate Average MPG, Instantaneous MPG and Average Speed :)

It maybe certain models do not support that feature, but it it is quite possible that there is a connector disconnected at the rear? there is an 18-pin connector that provides the info that the OBC part of the head unit uses to calculate the above which may not be fully pushed in?

Have you got an outside temperature displayed? that info is also from a data from that 18-pin connector.

I do have the outside temperature - but this is displayed on a seperate screen(the air temp/air speed screen)

I am going to have a look at the back of the Head unit tomorrow to see if it is a case of the cables not being plugged in, as the previous owner may have used a different head unit prior to selling the car.

I'll look out for the 18 pin connector.

Thanks for your help. ;)

On the Celica that button does nothing!

On the avensis, corolla and Rav 4 it does give some functionality... hence it is labelled "TRIP"/NAVI.

In terms of getting the NAVI, i will soon be selling my TNS310 system from my celica... (as i have an aftermarket system to install) however not sure how much good that will do as you will require the full loom and GPS antenna, which i certainly cannot be bothered to remove!

Yeah I had a look this morning before i had seen your reply. There are no visible cables for the trip function. Just seemed abit strange that a cheap yaris has the function, yet the celica doesn't have it.

I have decided to opt for changing the head unit altogether for something ipod compatible instead, as have little use for Sat Nav.

Cheers
