I have a 1994 manual Rav 4 which I find is an excellent car and very reliable, unfortunatly I now have a prolblem with my left foot and need an automatic so I was think would it be cheaper for me to swap the gearbox for an auto, doe's anyone know what gear boxes might fit the early models, I might be able to find auto Rav 4 in a brackers yard but if not are there any other suggestions other then me seel the car and buying an auto model?

Any advice would be apprieciated.

As there are auto RAVs around, then sticking in an auto box is possible. What else has to change is not something I know - for example the driveshafts, prop shaft, mounts etc. I don't know anyone who has done the conversion altho it interests me!

I think the thing to do is look out for a donor car and swap everything including the drive shafts etc. There will also be a gearbox ECU so some of the electronics will have to be changed. There are also throttle kick down cable and key inhibitor switch to consider. The brake/clutch pedal box and gearshift arrangements all have to be swapped too! Of course anything is possible but expect a big job and consider the help of a professional unless your are very competent. Before you jump in just check the price of a few auto models. It might not be cost effective to embark on such a big project.

Good luck.

Thanx for the reply, you have pointed out a few things I had overlook like the ECU, I am thinking it's probably going to be cheaper to swap the car for an auto and save me a bit of an headache.

Cheers

I would imagine its pretty similar to the 3SGTE engine swap in terms of size of job. That swap involves altering the clutch pedal box; and loads of other things including the full wiring harness around the engine area. For the end objective of only changing from manual to auto, then buying an auto would be cheaper and quicker. You could always keep the first car as a memento although even 1994 RAVs in nice condition attract £1500+.

I had thought of keeping the Rav just for the wife drive and buy a secound one for myself, I have been checking one or two out on eBay but have found now found one or two loacally that seem to fit the the bill.

Thanx for the reply, I must say this site is great for info and wealth of expertise and knowlage that seems to be availiable
