Which petrol do you buy? In my Astra I used to get slightly higher mileage (20-30 miles per tank - 52l) while using higher octane petrols in my Astra Mk4. The other benefit of buying high octane petrol was that the car was more silent. I've also heard that high octane petrol is actually better for the engine because it burns better.

Opinions?

Cheapest I can find, running one car on 98 octane is bad enough at 20-25 mpg. running both would be worse.

Our little engines were designed for economy and 95 octane petrol, higher octane would not make that much of a difference in my opinion.

Start modifying and it might be a different story.

I always go for the lower ron, higher ones make my car feel a bit sluggish

Cheapest I can get my hands on. Always.

Don't want to sound like a cheap skate but every time it's the bog standard one, I don't like getting ripped off as it is, without buying the extra bits with no obvious benefit. B)

OMV carerra 100. It's great, the car feels lively. Been using 100 since 0 km, now the car has 8600 km.

As for the fuel consumption, it's lower if you use the 100 octane IF you drive it for consumption. IF you drive it for performance the fuel consumption is higher than 95 octane.

Being a cheapskate has bugger all to do with it.... as I am a famous one.... but that fact is that our engines were designed for 95RON so, as Wild West Drifter has already mentioned, it'll make little to no difference to performance or economy....

It's clever marketing by the petroleum companies to get us to spend more money on so-called "better" fuel ;)

My wife drives like a granny, so I was thinking maybe 99RON would be better especially for the engine. But then all this Aygo adventure is about saving as much money as possible, so maybe paying more for petrol it's such a great idea.

V-Power. I get about 35-40 more miles per tank over "No Frills" petrol.

I get that difference between "normal tanks" depening on many circumstances,

so I can't even see how I could prove the higher RON to give better economy.

I once tried 3 succeeding tanks of 98, but didn't really notice

anything different other than my wallet getting thinner faster...

arent engines mapped to suit particular rons tho?

V-Power all the way. I would buy Tesco 99 if I had it in my area. After paying £8.5K for a new car - a few pence a litre aint saving me much. I'd sooner keep the engine running clean on the good stuff! After 6 months of using using it I'm averaging 60 mpg & am very happy with that.

I use 95 RON petrol, does the 1KR-FE have active knock control? If it does then you may be able to gain the benefit of higher octance petrol.

If the engine doesn't then I am going to be sticking to 95 RON.

I thought that all new cars have it. My X Reg Astra had it.

I asked a Techie at Toyota and he said the 1KR-FE does not have active knock control, I know from previous experience that techs don't seem to know as much as they make out.

I don't know if all new cars have active knock control, hence my question.

Well so far i've been using the cheapo 95 ron stuff however at the end of this month i intend to travel 20-odd miles to South Queensferry for petrol, not exactly Britain's greatest driving journey in the world i'll admit however there is logic to it (possibly)

There is a BP station that sells BP Ultimate 102 fuel there so i'll fill up the tank with that and see how i get on! Although at £2.42 a litre it will make for an expensive fill up!

Will post up a wee review when i get this done!

I use 95Ron because I can't get 93 :P

Mind you I have changed the oil to Mobil 1 as it is thinner and better quality than the chip pan fat the car comes with as standard.

Ok.. so the question is: does the 1KR-FE have active knock control? If it does, higher octane means better performance. If not, 95 or 100 octane = same thing. Can anyone find this out?

Quote from a post of 'aygo vvti':

The little toyota engine is a really good as i have known many friends who fitted turbo on their engine and they couldnt even run the engine as it was stalling when the throttle was opened! The anti knock sensor does its fair share too and i added a little pro-boost (octaine booster ) to the fuel as when revving it up to 4,000rpm it was very slightly pinking because of the lack of fuel (now its ok with the octaine up).
