Remapping 1.4d

Hi

I'm thinking about remapping my Yaris diesel (08). Has anyone else had this done? If so I would really appreciate any advice on the follwoing:

1. The power and torque improvements

2. Changes to fuel consumption

3. Best company to use

4. Changes to insurace premiums

5. Any affect in the emissions for the RFL (don't want to lose the £35 tax bracket!)

6. How dealers look on remapped cars

thanks - hopefully someone will be able to help me ;)

Hi, generaly most 1.4-D4D can be ECU remaped, the best settings for it are this ones:

110Hp; 240nm.

You can get more juice from it, but you must be carefull with it.

For me the best setting is 110hp - 240nm, and you can drive without damage the turbo or the motor.

If you drive "normally" you will get a good fuel improve with remaping.

On the other hand, Remaping is the same as losing the engine warranty... so it's up to you.

Why a re-map? why not just chip it?

20% increase in HP, if you drive it sensibly you get better MPG too! A chip kit on a Yaris can be removed/fitted in ten minutes

PM Me for prices

I have a psi powerbox on mine and it is great. It gives the car enough power to be fun. It keeps pace with things like civic ctdi, bmw 320d, mini cooper etc. It really is fun to see the look on some of their faces when they cant shake the little Yaris. Fuel economy has been unaffected.

If you like driving you must give it a try.

PSI are on the internet and are quite easy to find. There are dealers dotted around the UK. The nearest to me is a independent Porsche Specialist in Glasgow so there should be someone in your area. I actually got mine second hand so only cost me about half, they cost about £350-£500 depending on the car.

Really easy to fit, 2 connections onto the Battery and 4 plastic connectors onto the fuel rail, simple. There are plenty other similar products about which, I believe, do a similar thing.

To the best of my knowledge the box basically delivers more diesel to the cylinders hence more power, doesn't seem to adversely affect fuel consumption though!

Becaue there are no chages to turbo boost it should prove to be reliable.

My car copes very well with the extra power. Handling is safe, transmission is fine and the clucth has not slipped in about 10,000 miles of spirited driving.

The only thing I have needed is better tyres for grip in the wet to get the extra power down.

It really is the low down torque which makes the differnce, give it a go.

Toyota should do something similar with the diesel SR but with another 20% power and torque it would fly........& sell. ;)

@alan: Hi, and what the smoke?

Does your 1.4 D4D produces more smoke with powerbox or it's like the original?

Can you adjust your powerbox to other levels of power?

Those 2 wires that you connect to the Battery, are for suplying power to the powerbox?

I ask you this because all other types of powerbox's only have the connectors to the common rail, not those 2 wires to connect to the Battery I guess...

I am wondering to buy something much more cheaper from eBay... since I guess it's all the same stuff... agree ?!

Xana: I am wondering to buy something much more cheaper from ebay... since I guess it's all the same stuff...

Wrong! A decent chip of any type will be fully "Mapped" and able to know what your throttle position is, in order to give the correct setting. The cheap kits dont do this and produce a much harsher drive than a fully "Mapped" unit

Wrong?... the PSI chip for the 1.4 D4D is the same for the 2.0 D4D, so how can the same chip have the same software for all this 2 different engines ? (You can check this on PSI web page.)

Any ideas about it?

The two wires are indeed the power supply wires, the other connectors being for the fuel rail. I can't honestly say that there is more smoke.

Possibly a little more when putting the boot down but barely discernable.

The PSI I have is not adjustable, although I read somewhere that the jumper pins on the connector to the box can be used to get slightly more power but I can't confirm that.

As i have said, it is a nice mod and suits the car.

The car was in for it's 30,000 mile service today so I drove it without the box in place for the first time in a while. The biggest difference is definitely low down in the power band. The extra torque makes a big difference in how the car responds. I don't think that the extra horsepower, 17 or so, according to PSI, makes much difference.

I don't have any experience of other power boxes so I can't comment.

My last car was a Fiat Multipla (stop sniggering). I had that re-mapped by Angel Tuning and foolishly went for the higher power map c.155 bhp and lots of torque. It really flew but the car couldn't cope. The clutch slipped, the brakes struggled and the handling was silly. Quite soon the turbo failed and I was left with a big bill. The problem, I believe, was that turbo boost was increased beyond the safe working limits.....result, misery. Such modification probably should be accompanied by other internal work to the engine to ensure that it can cope with the changes; that of course, would be costly. AFAIK this should not be a problem with the powerbox and so far so good.

Hope this helps.

The cheap chips/tuning boxes on eBay fool the ECU into running rich ie pumping more fuel in all the time. This is not good for the car.

The proper tuning boxes eg psi power box or a full on remap, will give real torque and power improvements with likely increased fuel economy. These are proven modifications and are very popular with the VAG crowd.

Don't be fooled into buying cheap tat from eBay, you pay for quality with proven results.

What a load of claptrap, are the connectors a nice shiny metallic blue color? doe's it come in a pretty box? if tuning engines was this easy every manufacturer stick one on, it also delivers more fuel to the cylinders to give you more power without any increase in fuel consumption, rubbish, you don't get anything for nothing, the one thing missing from this is "It turbulates the air going into the cylinders"

are you selling this junk yourself?

please TOC members, don't be taken in with this nonsense

UK Republic: 100% agree, but the funny thing is that Toyota is selling it's own powerboxes... see TTE site from Toyota Europe.

I wonder why ???

What a fellow you are!!

Look on the internet at PSI Motorsport. Ask Parts King about them. These boxes work but they cost money ie c £300, not the cheap eBay gadgetry. Get one and try it before you start mis-leading people on this site. I happen to be a local govt employee and fitting really is as easy as i have stated.

PM me if you wish.

Alan

PS I don't know who Chris is...but he is talking out of his !Removed!!

Furthermore, I have a PSI Powerbox on my car and have had for about 10 months. It works and there have been no reliability issues thus far.

Have a look at my other posts, i am just a happy Yaris owner like everyone else here.

regards

Alan

What on earth has being a local government employee got to do with anything?

My bin man's a local government employee should we be asking him what he thinks too?

Is remapping retuning the ECU only available on diesel engines, I am more than happy with the top speed and the MPG on my Auris (petrol), but I would like a better top speed, I can feel under my foot that a little bit extra is available, but something is stopping it !

Just pointing out to ukrepublic that I don't work for PSI or sell these things for a living and that the fitting of my powerbox really is easy, provided you can operate a spanner. Maybe he can't. ;)

I can accept people being sceptical about this type of tuning but not someone here calling me a liar. Especially someone who obviously has no experience of such things.

You only have to scour the internet for a few minutes to find loads of info about them including roadtests which do demonstrate that they work. Whether or not you take the risk is, of course, up to the individual but I hoped that my experience would benefit the person who started this thread.
