Alternator, Battery Or Something Else?

Recommended Posts

I have already reported some of the strange things that have been happening with my Carina on this forum. The warning lights on the dash came on suddenly and changed from airbag warning to door open to engine and back again. Also the Battery warning light was on but very, very dimly. My headlights and background dash lights started to dim, my indicators/hazards started to click slower and dim. Even when I turned the car and lights off and opened my door, the 'headlights on' warning beep sounded, but decended in tone til eventually it stopped. This happened even though the lights were off. Car then did nothing when I tried to turn the key. Not a sound. A while later it tried to start by giving a fast clicking sound. Stereo still seems to work though.

Is this the alternator, the Battery or some other electronic fault?

ON a separate issue, the cable of my electric window, driver side is snapped and needs replacing. Is this a big job? Or an expensive job? Can the cable be replaced or do I need the full motor replaced? Thanks

hello there it sounds like the alternator is not charging have you got a spare Battery to put on if so put it on and get the alternator tested to see if it is charging, i dont think you can change the cables on window mechanism

Thanks John.

RE: Window mechanism, does that mean a new motor for the electric window? probably pricey enough then

I've left the car in and so far I'm being told that the alternator and fan belt need replacing. We won't know about the Battery until thats done. But the Battery might need replacing too. It's deader than disco at the moment. The alternator and belt will cost 431 euros including tax and labour. The Battery if needed will be another 100 euros.

the mechanism is the cables and pulleys, the motor should bolt to it so as long as the motor still works you only need the mechanism, not sure how much they are cheers john
