Please Help - Gen 7 Problem - Engine Management Light!

Hi,

Brand new to the Forum and hope someone can help. I bought my 1st Celica last week (a '51' plate 140 BHP version). Car got me home fine but about 2 minutes after putting petrol in for the 1st time the Engine Management Light came on and stayed on for the rest of the day. The following day it switched itself off but came back on later in the day and has remained on since.

I got a local Tune Up guy to come and have a look as he has one of those Diagnostic machines. It came back with the error code P1349 VVT (Variable Valve Timing System Malfunction Bank 1). After unplugging his diagnostic machine the light remained off but came back on after about 10 miles of driving.

Can someone please give advice as to my next step - have been advised to flush the system out with Forte Engine Flush and drive for a period of time (10-30mins) and then do a complete oil and filter change. A bit scared of the engine flush thing as have heard some negative stories and was wondering if just a simple oil and filter change would suffice.

Has anyone suffered the same code and what did you do to resolve?

I have not noticed anything negative regarding the driving or economy of the car.

Really hope someone can help.

When you get to 4600 revs, do you notice an increase in accleration?

Hi. Tried this after reading a few threads on this forum - possibly a slight increase but nothing spectacular.

The VVT kicks in at 4600 revs and produces an increase in speed, as the timing is alter for performance. It's not white knuckle stuff, but is easily noticeable over normal accerleration.

As you are able to notice the accerleration difference at this point, it appears that its working. Though it may only be to a point. Iceland_potter on here is having some problems with his VVT, it might be worth asking him about it. As it be something like the sensor needs cleaning/replacing.

The last 3 letters on the Reg aren't CFP are they? Sounds like the Celica I got rid of 3 weeks ago...

No it isn't. Another problem developed last night in that the alarm kept going for hours - eventually had to leave the car unlocked overnight. On driving today I noticed that the 'Door Open' symbol kept flashing on and off and sometimes remaining constantly on even though both doors and boot were securely shut.

Only had the car for 5 days and not looking promising. Bought it from a small time trader but still a business nonetheless so can hopefully get it fixed for free - he made a big point when selling me the car that by law I have a month to take it back (whether this is for repair or refund we have yet to establish). Unfortunately I go on holiday on Saturday for 3 weeks so need to get something arranged by Saturday as the month will have elapsed by the time I get back - awaiting his call back by tomorrow at the latest.

All very frustrating.
