Rear Suspension Problem

My ST202 has developed a serious knocking on NSR caused by a leaking suspension strut.

Not being a lottery winner, I couldn't afford dealer prices to replace both sides and got a good price for copies from Parts Plaza.

Mechanic fitted the new LH & RH struts but found that the rear wheels were severly cambered in at the top and out at the bottom, rendering the car undriveable.

Took the new struts off again and compared with old ones and found the bolt holes were not in the same place.

On the old struts the bottom holes are closer to the strut, the top holes are 5mm further out.

On the new stuts the top holes are closer to the strut, the bottom holes are 5mm further out.

Contacted Parts Plaza who claim that the parts supplied are definately the right ones for the year & frame (0050910) and no-one else has had this problem. My Celica does not have super-strut suspension.

Possible scenarios include:

1) Faulty batch of struts with bolt hole section welded on upside down.

2) Supplied with super-struts instead of standard.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Can anyone recommend another supplier (reasonable prices)?

Can anyone help please?

Cheers

im not 100% sure as its a long time since i owned a celica, but as far as i know the insert should be a screw in type , you should be able to screw all the inserts out and use the new inserts in your old struts.

the top of the strut should have a big big nut , this screws off allowing the insert to be removed and changed.

even the bolt holes on them new shocks look to be a bigger size , this will allow tilting also if you dont use thicker bolts.

Thanks GT4 Booster

We had a look at that option but the new ones have a collar which is crimped securely onto the main body, there is no nut.

The old ones are a sealed unit, no nut there either.

The part numbers off the old struts are 48530-2B390 & 48540-2B390, when I Google these they cross reference as being KYB parts 334125 & 334126, which are the new ones I've got, which don't fit.

What the heck is goin' on folks?!?

I managed to solve the problem by buying new BOGE struts and returning the KYB struts which were causing the wheels to camber in.

The part no.s are 32-C78-A and 32-C79-A incase anyone else has a similar problem.

Thanks for your suggestions.
