Rear Parking Sensor Problem

Hi,I am new to the forum and was wondering if anyone can offer me some advice.

I have a 06 Rav 4 XT4 5door auto and up intil 4pm today have had a wonderful driving time with my car!!

I parked my car in London and when i came to drive home a very considerate volvo owner had squeezed into the smart car sized gap between me and and another vehicle in front of me.

As i angled to pull out from being the jam in the sandwich I reversed and had to pull right up to the bumper of the Volvo behind me,the parking sensor was beeping as normal and was on continous beep mode until i drove away.

When i got home and was reversing into my driveway as soon as i put car into reverse the parking sensor just emitted a continous beep even though nothing was blocking the rear of the car,now everytime i put car in reverse the sensor is beeping constantly until i change out of reverse!!

How do i disable the parking sensors until i can get it checked out and has anyone had a similar problem?

Have checked the sensors from the back of the car and they do not look damaged,would it be possible for me to isolate them and how would i go about this?

All I really want is to be able to turn the system off so that I can drive and reverse without being distracted by the !Removed! constant beep!

The sensors were fitted as part of the protectom pack option.

sorry to ramble on but its driving me nuts

thanks in advance for any advice forthcoming

Hi Famine12,

if it is a genuine Toyota system, there should be a switch in the boot ( left hand side, close to rear door ) that turns off the system. The switch is usually used when towing but works at any time. This all sounds completely obvious, but the switch ( on mine anyway ) is a small round afair that is all but invisible against the plastic material in the boot. The sensors are prone to interference from the slightest bit of muck so a careful clean might help. Pay particular attention to the grooves around the sensors and make sure that they have not been even slightly dislodged from their position flush with the bumper face. Good luck! Post again if the problem is not solved.

hope this helps

Chris

Hi Chris,

Many many thanks i have just gone out with a torch and have managed to find the Off switch,I will give the sensors a good clean and check over tomorrow also does anyone know if it would be possible to get to the actual connecters on the sensors because i have been told that if i managed to disconnect the dodgy sensor i would be ok to go with the 3 working sensors? and finally anyone know how much i will be looking at paying to have the system fixed if i cant sort it myself?

Once again thanks chris

cheers

They may argue the point, but if you can't sort it with Chris' advice, as the car is under warranty, go into the dealers with the attitude and assumption that the reversing sensors are covered as well (nothing to lose ;) )

Famine.I have just had my XTR repaired after damage to the rear ( insurance job) There was damage to the bumper that cracked and dislodged on of the sensors.Whilst I was waiting for the car to be repaired the sensors still behaved as they should have. I suspect that if there is no obvoius damage to the bumper your problem may be with muck lodged in the grooves.Beware if you do find that one of the sensors is faulty Toyota will not sell you a single unit.If at any time you identify one of the sensors as being faulty pm me, the dealers kindly left my old sensors in the car after the repair, I will gladly send you one.Mine is a 56 model so the protection pack would be the same.The sensors have changed slightly on the later models.

WARRANTY!! :)

Mart.

YES can't see why it shouldnt be covered by WARRANTY, Should/Do they all have a disabling switch, because i have a 2007 rav and don't know anything about a switch, sure i would have noticed,but TBH ive never looked :unsure:

Stew

The switch should go here;

However, they put mine in the end of the lower recess where the dog gaurd goes (left hand side as you look in the boot).

The fault finding info for the sensors is attached;

Ref the disable switch - it all depends where the sensors have been fitted (port of entry/dealership etc)

If factory/port of entry then the switch is usually fitted. If it is a dealer fitment and you dont have a towbar then 9/10 you wont have a switch as its not part of the TPA400 kit and is a seperate kit to order.

The switch isnt really easy to see unless you really look for it as its only small and black.

the accessories will be covered under warranty too.

Nope! my switch is AWOL, not got one :( But i have learned a lesson, SHOULD i ever buy another new RAV, i will insist that it comes fitted with any extras... MY DEALER, RRG fitted my Abar, very badly, fitted my corner protectors badly, didnt fit the right cill guards, + haven,t fitted a switch to my parking aid, which they also fitted badly, and also fitted my rear bumper protector over the top of the standard one, So guess who i won,t be buying my SR180 off ?

I WON'T ACTUALLY BE BUYING ONE OFF ANYONE FOR AT LEAST 5yrs, unless i win the lottery :D

........and there is really no excuse Stew. The kit comes with the switch and all you do is remove a loop out of the loom (just unplugs), drill a hole for the switch and plug it in. It takes about 3 - 5 minutes extra. Mine were fitted at the dealer and it took me longer to gather all the bits of tie wraps and clean the oily boot marks out from under the boot liner than it would have to do it myself and that stood me at £400.

Once bitten.........

Had a look at the SR180 when at MrT on Saturday. To be honest, without leather upholstery it just does not look right :huh:

No TBH, when you consider what I/WE have spent on our cars and what we would get in px, it would be a much to big a step, as you say £23000+

and I guess £1250 for leather, and greater mpg, and the dreaded runflats, :help: My next sevice is a big one so i will mither Kingo to let me have a play in one while i am waiting :yes: and I promise i will drive it very slow + carefully :driving::naughty:

Hi Stew,

do you think that we could get a flying pig icon added to the collection used by the site? It would work particularly well with the "and I promise i will drive it very slow + carefully" bit. ;)

Bet Chatman's already got one somewhere.

The cancellation is definately not part of the TPA400 rear sensor kit, its a seperate part which req's ordering when needed. Comes in a little plastic bag of its own :)

Yes possibly so Mart.

On the set I fitted on a 4.2 we extended the wire to one of the spare blanks in the console as he tows a caravan and wanted to access the switch without opening the rear door. We used a switch that fitted the blank but on mine which was fitted by the dealer a switch was included so I must have got a bit more VFM for my £400!

Lo y'all :lol:

Sorry to bring this chesnut up again... but can some one be a bit more descriptive to where the on off switch would normally be... :unsure:

I've looked all over and can't find one. I do believe that the RAV came with the sensors built in and was not an after thought...

unfortunately due to the fact that I work for such a GREAT company... we are not allowed to look at photoalbums and also the pictures posted by the guru known to many of us as the ever great ANCHORMAN... are not visible to oneself....

Hi Rob

I know some can't see some photos and pdf's but I'll post both!

The switch on mine is hiding in the recess underneath the 12V socket in the LH side of the boot liner;

Had a quick look and I can't see a switch either.

Not that it bother's me, I'm not going to tow anything anyway, so no need for a switch.
