Corolla T Sport Help Needed

Well here is the low down folks. Got the car a couple of weeks ago. Private sale.

Now i think ***** is hitting the fan. It's an 03 plate, 1.8 VVTLi (T SPort) corolla.

Its done 50700 miles. Which I didn't think was a lot. However, as I can do a lot of DIY mechanicing, I thought I would change the oil and filter, fuel filter, spark plugs run some injector treatment. Because there is only a part service history, and I wasn't to sure how well it was taken care of.

So literally, went out to Halfords tonight to get some stuff. Purchased everything I wanted then jumped in my car. Turned the key, started the engine. Then felt the urge to cry. After only having covered 100miles, the Engine Management Light has come on, the TRC light and VSC are also stuck permantly on!!! I hoped a simple turn off, turn on would make them sod off. But no, I think I have them for the long haul!!

Yes this does fit with my car history, just unlucky. Having crashed a car at 17, someone going into the back of me at 19, someone crashing into the side of my brother whilst he drove my car when I was 20. And this year, NO WORD OF A LIE, my brothers birthday present to me on my 21st, was a phone call, saying he had caused a 3 car pile up in my car (writing it off). Then whilst I was driving a temporary car on my holidays this year, visiting family. A wee chav, smashed my car window, stole everything and sodded off so after travelling 350 miles, I had to wait for the autoglass man to come on my last day, so couldn't see other members of my family. Then today, the hat-trick of lights.

So a few things I would like to know. Would the TRC and VCS lights cause the engine warning light to come on? Is it def a dealer only thing? I have access to OBD facilities would error codes help? If it is dealer only is it likely to cost a lot, I would imagine so. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, that or I think I might kamakazy the car into the persons house i bought it from.

Thanks in advance

Jonathan

has the car got any mods ie k&n typhoon or anythin?? the common problem with the t sports and them lights comin on is a naffed air mass sensor or a cable snapped on the air mass sensor but you haft to look very carefull at the cables to c if they have split because they dont always totally seperate, also is the car in limp home mode as it wont go over 3500 rpm???

Despite the manual saying not to, I tried to see if it still went into Lift. And it does, so it's not in Limp mode.

No modifications, and I have kept an eye on the oil. It hasn't moved from between the two markers. Judging by some research, my initial thought of the TRC, VSC causing the engine light to go on is wrong. And infact the engine light can cause the TRC/VSC lights to go on. Tempted to just try pulling the fuse like everyone suggests. I think tommorow or Sunday I will hook it upto the OBD.

Keep the suggestions coming folk, really appreciate it. I worked on a similar problem where the Lambda sensor broke, and caused the engine light to come on.

Have the tyres been changed recently?

This has caused the warning lights in the past.

i think i am going to go down this route, and if it comes back on diagnose it. Some people say weak spark plugs can cause it. Got new plugs just waiting to go in.

No tyre changes.

I think I wil read the codes from it first. Then reset it. See if it comes back on. How can i tell if the TRC is def working? Is the light not staying on enough do you think .

If the lights on it wont be working.

I had the same problems when my typhoon was first fitted. Who was / were the previous owners? Is there any chance they've had an induction kit / air filter on it before? Maybe they haven't reconnected the vacuum hoses correctly or something.

Everything looks pretty generic. Not sure about any previous work. As for T Sport spark plugs, can you use the Bosch super 4? I bought some Bosch super 4 for the Celica 1.8 VVTL engine as i believe it to be the same. Alot of people say that you have to use Iridum, but the Bosch ones are silver, and as far as i am led to believe Iridium just offers a long life, but not the gretest performance.

The service book states Iridium, i think it best to buy the correct plugs, Fensport sell them as well as Mr T.

As you have lift then the car has only had a minor hickup not the full fat one when she goes into limp mode, that really was bad! Disconnect the Battery or pull the fuse's, see if the lights go out if they do then run her for normally and see how it goes.

I read that thread, and to be honest it quite scared me. I am just hoping that it is something simple. So the Bosch Super 4s are a no go. Just get Iridum? Everyone else just use Iridium?
