I think the taxman has taken a bit more than he should have done

Use your personal tax code and divide that over the year to get your monthly allowance.

Then look at what you've earned each month and deduct the relevant tax % from it.

Compare all the months to see if you underpaid tax one month and this is catching up with your correct tax payments.
