Hi has anyone experienced high oil consumption, on their avensis i have a d4d, and have been to the dealer nearly every month burns higher than 1 liter per 500 miles, dealers fitted new piston rings, but seems to still be consuming oil is this normal. to top up more than once between services.

Help anyone had the same problem

Have a look in the handbook to see if it has a "normal" oil consumption figure, in the Honda handbooks (yes i know you dont have a Honda!) it states that 1 litre per 600 miles is considered acceptable oil usage! Tricky issue this presuming your car has the correct grade of oil in it.

I do not think it is normal. You do not state the model you have apart from being D4D. I have Toyota Avensis Reg 2003 D4D 2.0 engine and I only change the oil once a year, during service. I do not know but if I were in your shoes I would go and ask for a second opinion (go to a different garage).

Cheers.

I totally agree it isn't normal and if any car i owned did this i wouldn't be happy!, just be aware of what the manufacturers can perceive as normal. If the dealer refused to do anymore work then they could use this as a reason.

The model i have its a 2.2 yes in the book says 1 liter for every 600 miles its ok before they changed the piston rings they worked it out as 1.2 liters per 500 miles, not a pretty site, now i need to find the numbers every 600 miles need to go to the garage so they can top up the oil.

this makes the car very expensive to run, just wanted to know if there have been some reports of this problem before, toyota just says its normal this surely can't be the case, owned other cars before diesels no problem with oil consumption.

What should i do to take this higher, surely toyota need to be responsible for this.

hello mate

1) what is total millage of yr car/engine ?

2) whether the engine has been dismantled before?

3) what lube oil has been using and whether it is for diesel?

4) how often did you test injectors?

5) has dealer shown you dimentions chart (pistons + liners) when they changed piston rings?

OK now look --->

ref 1):

this matter is self explained with engine wear down;

ref 2):

in case the engine has been dismantled then you may do not know how was it assembled;

ref3):

the correct oil apply is very important to neutralize sulphur acid inside each cylinder. in case you have been using a wrong oil then this oil alkality number could not be sufficient to neutralize sulphur acid and this leeds to an acid attack to each cyl liner and as a final -- increasing of its ID or pitting. Due to ID increasing all piston rings joints are forced to be expanded enabling oil to be sucted upwards to a combustion chanber;

ref4):

the injection quality is also very important -- another words in case the engine has been running wiith poor injection then some diesel remained as not burnt and the same is converted into a soot and this soot could block all piston rings and moreover drain holes inside the scrappers grooves;

ref5):

in case dealer has changed only piston rings -- this is not enough. they had to show you all dimentions charts for both pistons and liners in order to compare whether all of them are in limits. they had to show you dimentions of each piston groove first --- because even they have installed new rings but not checked with gaps between ring and groove -- -this will also leed to oil suction and burning.

the above are possible reasons of your problem.

cheers/Igor

Hi

1)The total millage its 35000 october 2006

2) As far as i know the engine only has been dismantled when they have done the piston rings, i have purchased the car second hand when it was 11 months old

3) Toyota has been topping up the oil dont know what oil they have been using

4) I havent tested the injectors how do you that??

5) no dealer didnt shown me the dimention chart is that a standard thing.

the still has over a years warranty but the dealers dont seem to be in a rush really, its mad how they just want to wash their hands of it.
