Driveshaft Oil Seal. '97 Rav

So I changed my cambelt succesfully and am ready for my next job. While I was under there trying to jam the flywheel (unsuccesfully!) I notice my near side driveshaft oil seal is leaking and making a bit of a mess.

Is there anything to look out for when changing this and how do I change this? Will the rest of the oil p~~s out when I pull the driveshaft out and how do I check gbox oil level? I'll probably change it while I'm at it as I don't think it's been done for at lease 6 years, if ever.

Can someone remind me how to contact Kingo for the bits as well please.

Cheers

Sly

You will lose the oil from the box when you pull the drive shaft. Drain the oil first (this is a 4.2 but its virtually the same box);

You then have to remove the drive shaft nut, bottom ball joint and knock the drive shaft out through the hub. Then lever the shaft out of the box (it is held in by a snap ring. You can usually lever the seal out of the gearbox with a screwdriver or similar tool but do not damage the casing. Clean the casing then use a flat piece of wood against the seal and tap it with a hammer making sure it doesn't twist. When it gets flush with the casing tap it all the way home with a good fitting socket. As soon as it stops don't hit it any more and make sure the spring is still inside the lip. Oil the drive shaft and carefully feed it in all the time rocking it back and forth to engage the spline in the final drive. Push it all the way in and use a rubber mallet to make sure it goes all the way in to the snap ring but dont damage the rubber boot. Pull the shaft to make sure it has engaged. Put the outer end back through the hub and then re-attach the lower ball joint. Run the nut up but don't tighten it until the wheel is on the ground (torque 159 ft/lbs).

Refil the gearbox with oil;

So Kingo can supple a kit for £40 that has two shaft seals and two for the gearbox. I spoke to Toyota and they want £20 just for one gearbox seal. They talked about inner or outer? Where do the shaft seals sit then and do I need to replace them too? I was just gonna pull the shaft out, stick a seal in the gearbox housing and whack it back together (put simply) but now I'm all confused!

I will make Kingo aware of this post and maybe he can show you the diagrams. There is one seal in the gearbox and one seal in the hub on both sides of the car (4 seals). Your analogy seems sound enough to me!

Hi, How do you remove the Rubber seal from the Driveshaft going into the Gearbox?

Mines was brust and wanted to replace it however, it's not wanting to come out at all.

I've tryed a big long iron bar and with that much force it's started to bent out of shape and not wanting to keep doing it incase I snap it. Thanks

You sometimes do bend them all shapes but it will start to weaken and pop out. Keep trying :thumbsup:
