Idle Issue On Carina E 4afe

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have a 93 Carina E 1.6 (4AFE engine) which has been stood for a few weeks as I was abroad.

It's starts fine, however the idle speed is higher than normal after driving it around, just like

it would be starting it from cold.

My brothers's 96 1.3gli corolla also has the same problem - both cars were left at the same time.

Anyone have any ideas what I should investigate?

Any help appreciated.

I took the throttle body air intake hose off and squirted some WD40 into the little hole to lubricate the

idle control valve. I've done this a few times now and it doesn't seem to help. The EFI fuse was also

removed for short while to reset the idling values - unfortunately it's still the same i.e idling speed is

much higher than normal when warm. Seems like 1500+ rpm, also now the gas pedal doesn't stick

anymore - which was a feature of these cars.

I driven the car daily 70 odd miles - fuel consumption is woeful compared to before.

I carried out the same procedure with the Corolla and my brother did say it started to get slightly

better as he drove it - unfortunately the car was written off recently.....@ 73k

Wondering if it's the lambda sensor... Any suggestions?

I solved the problem now.

Seemed like it was the idle control valve all along, the WD40 eventually did the trick - along with fast motorway runs.

It was easing off yesterday and this morning seemed to be drop back to 700 - 800 rpm idle which I'll settle for ;).

The gas pedal doesn't stick anymore (used to for the first 30 seconds or so) - I must have lubricated the butterfly

valve too, apparently it was like this since new.

My dad was pleased as it's his car - he finally thought it was time to let it go....
