D-4d Low Pitch Squeeling

St Thicket

I have the 2003 Rav4.2 with the 2.0 D-4D Engine...

I hear a squeeling noise from the engine every now and then. It's becoming more frequent, and I've told the mechanics every time I take it to service. They say that the belts are OK, and that they haven't been able to hear the sound during testing. This have been going on the last 45,000 km...

The sound is low pitch, not like the normal high pitch sound that is normally heard when turning the steering wheel or revving the engine. The sound never appears during steering, and rarely during acceleration. It can appear when changing a gear or just when releasing the accelerator when driving on the highway.

I suspect that the sound comes from the alternator belt, but not the belt itself. Could it be a wheel that makes this noise? Has anyone had this problem before?

Hasn't anchorman said in previous posts that you need to boil the kettle and pour hot water on the belt???

Yer dieselly engine maybe thinks its a steam engine? Time for psychotherapy! :P

I get that also, seems to come at infrequent times but mainly when the car is idling or moving slowly. I first thought it was the power steering, but it also happens when the wheel is not being turned. A friend who has not heard the noise suggested that it may be the servo

Does it happen when you are changing gear or touching the clutch?

Can you provoke it by switching on the lights, heater and heated rear screen all at once?

It seems like it happens due to change in rpms, sometimes. Other times, it just happen without provocation. Once it appeared when the car was situated in an odd angle, like sideways on a hill... I didn't do anything.

I've thought about the power consumption, but it can't be it. The sound doesn't appear more frequent due to more power generation.

As I mentioned, I think it might be one of the wheels guiding the belt... or am I completely off track?

If we are talking about the same sound, mine lasts for only a couple of secs and sounds as if it is winding up in tone.

No lights or extra load on the alternator, not touching the clutch or even moving. Normally happens to me quite soon after startup, so maybe the alternator recharging the Battery ?
