1.3 2nz, Chain Or Belt?

I've heard a lot of people saying the 1st gen Yaris has got chains, but does this concern all of them, or specific engine types. Got a letter about a year ago from Toyota stating the belt should be replaced, but I didn't take it seriously as I thought the Yaris had a chain and shouldn't be replaced. Came to think of this a couple of days ago, it's done 60k now (fairly little actually), but better to ask than being stranded.

I did search, but 1.3 isn't a good search string to go by.

It'd be best if someone that knows this could fill me in, not someone who has read or heard something ;)

Hi

Taken from Auto Express review

Service intervals: scheduled maintenance dates alternate between minor and major, and all Yaris powerplants have been fitted with chain rather than belt-driven cams. These are durable, but should be replaced every 100,000 miles or 10 years.

So no you don't need a belt but in 40,000 miles you need a chain....

You can read the full review here

Good Luck

Pete
