Avenis Auto Box Oil Level

I have an Avensis 2007 2 ltr auto and when checking the ATF I found it above the high mark with the engine cold but with the engine running the level was about right. Does anyone know if the level is checked with the motor running or stopped? No fluid has been added since purchase.

What's ATF? I'd guess at Automatic Transmission Fluid?

Check your oil level with engine running & preferbly hot.
