Fitting New Rear Wiper Arm?

Recommended Posts

Posted

Has anyone sucessfully changed their rear wiper arm.

I am trying to change mine for a longer one as supplier by the 107 club.

I notice the arm is on a plastic shaft.

I have managed to remove the nut(12mm) but cannot shift the wiper arm. Worried about using too much pressure, plastic and glass being my main worries.

I fitted a rear wiper arm from a Fiat Punto on the back of my CityBug.

Rear wiperblade modification

The standard rear wiper is a little bit small and I don't like the design very much.

On many CityBug forums you can find topics about larger wiperblades for the rear wiper.

But in most case the wiperblade is too long at the left side of the wiper so that's no option for me.

After thinking about it I decided to take a rear wiper from a Fiat Punto (MkI+MkII are good).

I like this rear wiper because of the nice and sharp design of the wiper.

The standard wiperblade is 12" / 30cm long and the wiperblade of the Punto wiper is 13" / 32,5cm long.

The wiper and the wiperblade of the Punto wiper are a little bit longer than standard wiper arm and wiperblade.

There is only a small difference in mounting the wiper arms.

The standard wiper arm is mounted on a 8mm bolt.

And the Punto wiper arm is mounted on a 6mm bolt.

So you have to drill the hole in the Punto wiper arm a little bit larger.

When you have done that, the Punto wiper arm can be mounted.

Here you see a pictures of my Punto rear wiper modification.

Looks good, Have purchased the unit from the 107 shop, but as I said in my initial post I cannot shift the old arm to fit the new one.

Nut came undone but need to remove the arm from the shaft .

Getting the original wiper arm off was quite some work.

I used some WD40 and a block of wood to "lift" it off.

Cheers, will try at the weekend and let you know how I get on.

I just changed the wiper blade for a longer one which works fine, without the need to change the arm...unclip the old , clip in the new...

I did remove the arm later to reposition it as it was "drooping" a bit below the horizontal, and I used a cycle sprocket puller (cheap from Halfrauds and useful to have lurking in the garage) to remove it without any problem, before repositioning it.

It was tight though!

I replaced the wiper with one from a Citroen C2.

Its about 40cm long and makes a real difference.

(Halfords W22 £6.79).

The wiper arm was "drooping" slightly.

To remove / adjust the wiper arm:

Hinge up the cover from the securing nut.

Slacken the 12mm nut while holding the arm steady. (About 3 turns is all you need).

Place a piece of wood or thick folded cardboard on the rear window

just next to the wiper arm and GENTLY lever it up on its taper.

(Leaving the nut in place will prevent it coming off all together).

Rotate the arm to the desired position, re-tighten the nut and flip the cover back down.

I've set my wiper to run parallel to the horizontal heated rear screen elements.

Looks much better.

Ian.

Don't forget to protect the glass!

It is made entirely of "Brittle" and "Snap" which are expensive.

Hi Guys,

Update, haven't changed the arm yet, went out over the weekend and met Uncle jack (Daniels) for a long session and it was better that I did not try to change the arm.

wiper changed.

You guys are right, it was a bar steward to get off, used a ball joint spitter to free it.

Only problem now is I've got to take my Aygo club sticker off the back window because it catches on the blade. :crybaby:
