Worrying Noises, Carina 2.0 Litre

Recommended Posts

Posted

Our 1995 Carina 2.0 (3S-FE) has developed a worrying noise. it's intermittent and may not do it for several days and then for no apparent reason, while driving, it will start again. The best way to describe it is the sound you get when when you put a screwdriver into a spinning metal fan. It doesn't sound internal to me, but I can't find anything in the engine compartment that might make that noise. It will do it when the car is stationary, so it's engine related. Anyone have any ideas where I should look next? Has anyone else had this problem?

Cheers

;) I know it sounds stupid but have you checked your power steering fluid (The racks are a weak point on some of these cars.) If the fluid is getting too low you can get terrible (at first intermittent) noises from it ! We have a a 1995 2.0 GLi Auto Est (Over 3 years) so can speak from experience . (If not then It could be even more serious.)

Thanks I'll check the power steering fluid this evening.

I checked the power steering fluid and it's full. So it's somewhere else.

Is it possible that the starter motor is catching on the flywheel sometimes?

The sound is an clanging sort of noise, not a metallic noise like engine problems give.

Possibly a heat shield (On exhaust.) if it's not mechanical.

Does it sound anything like this ?(Turn your volume up.)

Hi. No it's not as quiet as that! It's more of a clanging sound. I wondered if it might be the starter motor, teeth catching on the flywheel. It's that kind of noise. Trouble is it's so intermittent it can go afor a week or two without making a sound and then for no apparent reason, it'll start again.
