hi all,i have been suffering a worrying problem whilst towing my caravan with my '03' rav4 d4d.this has happened three times now,at different times.

usually when i am towing up an incline and having shifted from 5th to 4th, when i change back up to 5th the engine management light comes on, i lose all power and have to pull over. after shutting the engine down for just a few seconds i restart and she runs away sweet as you like without any further problems, uphill downhill and all.

this has only happened when towing.

any advice greatfully accepted......

Hi

Can't help with a cause or repair suggestion just a confirmation that yours does not act like mine. Something must be wrong I tow 1500kg caravan and a trailer for work 02 plate D4.2 85K. I have no problems with light coming on/off.

We've had this before. I think it was SCV valves in the end. Can you get the fault code?

hi anchorman, not being overly familiar with all things mechanical i don't have a scooby what SCV valves are, however i bow to your advanced wisdom...

the garage didn't provide me with a code but they did say that it was the turbo that was the problem?

if this relates to the SCV valves is it a big job and importantly is it costly?

thanks again. :(

A pair of SCV valves come to you for £194.16, there would normally be a code stored in the ECU if they are faulty. Turbo's dont normally fail, but can show up as a problem associated with certain fault codes

The fuel is delivered to the engine via a very high pressure pump. The only means of regulating the pressure is to restrict the amount of fuel it can draw from the tank and this is done by the suction control valves. There are 2 on a 4.2 like yours but later models have only one. The valves are fairly easy to change and Kingo can provide you with the parts. However, I don't want you throwing money away as there are other faults that give similar symptoms so it is best to know what code was stored when the engine light came on.

If you pm me with your email address I will send you a pdf that shows you how to extract the code.

Cheers
