2004 Corolla 1.6 Gasoline Vs Corolla 1.4 D-4d

I'm considering to buy a corolla, and would like an automatic gearbox.

How does the diesel compare to the gasoline when it comes to performance? What about fuel consumtion?

Is the diesel noticeably louder than the gasoline?

Is there anything I should look for when testing these cars?

Cheers

My present car is a Corolla 1.6 petrol auto, previously I had a Corolla 1.4 Diesel M.M.T.

The diesel was slower to 60 m.p.h (about 14.5 secs.) If fully loaded it struggled up hills. Fuel consumption in mainly town driving averaged 38 m.p.g, My petrol auto averages 30 m.p.h and feels a lot quicker.

The Diesel is noisy, but not excessive, although the petrol is far superior in this respect.

If you go for the diesel auto it will probably be a M.M.T. gearbox, take a long test drive. I tried to adapt to M.M.T. without much success. My present Petrol Auto is miles better in terms of smoothness.

Then again its all a matter of personnel preference and the way you drive.

Thanks for your reply.

I tested the Diesel yesterday, and concluded that it was really slow. It was the MMT, and changing gears took ages. I really liked the fuel economy, but hated the gearbox, so I ended up with the petrol instead.

The more I think about it, the more satisfied I am. I've read so much negative about the MMT lately... and considering that I will spend much time in slow traffic, then the fully automatic gearbox will suit me better.

I ended up buying a 2004 corolla 1.6 petrol with original sat nav and 16" rims. It has 54,000 miles on the dial... it's much, but not that bad. I'll probably drive about 10,000 a year.

cheers

You have made a good choice.

Mine is the best car I have ever had, and that's in over forty years of driving. O.K.,that shows my age!

A few pointers, although you probably know already, if so forgive me. Starting from cold they rev a lot until warm. Sometimes they creak when you get in. Its the handbrake, normal. I use the cancel overdrive button in speed limits, it keeps your speed down as they are a pretty fast car.

Enjoy
