Oil Filter - Replacement Problem

Hi

I have a 2001 Avensis GLS and have changed the engine oil and filter about five times over the years and never had any problem This time however I cannot get the new filter to catch on the thread, it is as if the threaded tube is too short.

The filter I have always used in the past is a mann W68/1, the filter that will not fit is a mann W68/1. Luckily I am well known to my local spare part shop and he exchanged the fist filter that would not fit, he also gave me 2 more that would not fit. Then he placed a new order with his supplier and again the filter would not fit. All of these filters are mann W68/1. I have now teporarily put the old dirty filter back on until I can get advise.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks

Original filter around €15 or you could check thread for possible damage?

Thanks Beagh, There is definitly no damage to the thread. I will go for an original filter as you suggest.

Update:-

I have today purchased and successfully fitted a Toyota filter 90915-YZZJ1. The femail thread on this filter starts at least 3.5 mm nearer the top of the filter than the thread of the mann W68/1 filter and therefore allows more turns for a snug fit.

Although the car had a mann W68/1 fitted when I purchased it four years ago and I have since successfully fitted the same W68/1 filter 5 times since, I must have been lucky because it is obviously not the correct filter for the car. Another worrying point - my car parts stockist's reference book states that the W68/1 is the correct filter for my car, I now know this is not correct.

Just about sums up non-genuine parts for you. I have no idea why people would fit a non gen filter, a critical part of the engines heart, for the sake of a tenner for the correct part that fits the car and actually does what it says on the tin!!!

Glad you got it sorted.

As Parts-King has said, you can't go wrong with genuine parts.

Something to check the next time you change the filter though. Make sure that the rubber seal that is fitted to the OLD filter is still on the filter when you remove it, and not stuck to the engine. This could cause it not to fit properly and may explain why the new one didn't fit. This happened to me the first time I did an oil change on my first ever car. The seal was stuck to the engine and I didn't notice. Screwed on the the new filter and filled with oil. Ran it for a couple of minutes and there were no apparent leaks. Drove off about an hour later and there was a huge puddle and trail of oil, all the oil had run out because of the old seal causing the new one not to seal properly! Stopped the engine as soon as the oil light came on.

Refitted filter, filled with oil and I was good to go.

To Avensis luna 03,

Which dealer did you buy filter from. Just paid €15.23 inc tax from T.Hogan branch for D4D filter part nu: T90915300038T.

Or is yours a petrol engine.

If you cannot mention dealer, maybe county instead i'll figure it out.

Could by 2 of your filters for the price of one of mine.

Regards, Beagh.
