Phantom Fuel Leak On Toyota Avensis - Can You Help?

My Avensis lost power and diagnostic light came on. Restarted engine, and all fine - but the diagnostic showed 'large fuel leak'. Continued driving for a while, and still getting 58mpg. Toyotal suggested replacing fuel pump, which I did. Okay for a week, and then same again - engine loses power, fine on restarting, and diagnostic cays 'large fuel leak'. This time, am getting black smoke from exhaust. Reset the fault and all is fine. For a few days, then same again. Check ERG valve, and all clear. Light came on, then switched itself off. But occasional lapse of power and the light will come back. Is this familiar to anyone? Thanks. All suggestions gratefully received. It's sending me mad and costing a small fortune.

common rail is leaking internaly and the fuel pressure sensor is detecting that the rail pressure is falling faster than the fuel being injected into the engine, replace the common rail.. DTC will be a P12.. code

Diagnostic showing large fuel leak? Can you supply error codes or code, if so may be able to help.

The error code each time has been the same: P0093 'Fuel system leak detected - large leak'

Any help much appreciated, as I've spent a lot trying to solve this, including one grand on a new pump.

The fuel efficiency throughout all the errors, over 4 months now, has been consistently very high 58mpg.

So I'm guessing there is no fuel leak.

Hi I have a avensis 2lt d4d 2004 model. The car is doing the same as yours. Had it in the garage and the diagnostic said the same this as yours. Cab you tell me if you got it fixed as this problem has happened three times this week to me.

Hi, I have a very similar problem just recently.

My Avensis 2.0 D-4D 2004/54 cdt250 69,000 cambelt done, fsh, runs fine all day ( when warm), and it starts up fine in the morning, but if i then slow down or stop whilst the engine is still cold, i cannot set off again, there is no power, but seems to idle ok if you dont touch the accelerator. If you leave it idling like this, it will cut out after a short while. By restarting engine all is fine - but the diagnostic showed 'large fuel leak'. Continued driving for a while, still getting good mpg. Reset the fault and all is fine until next morning, same thing.

10 months ago i accidently put 0.5 litre of petrol in the tank, then topped up with diesel, then retopped at half tanks 3 times. It has been running perfectly all this time, and had a perfect mot emmisions test 6 months ago.The fuel filter has dents on it, will be checking if it was actually changed last service 6 months ago, was billed for it, so will see.

Would appreciate any assistance.

Did you guys manage to fix yours, if so what did you do ?

PS anyone tell me details for replacing fuel/oil/air filters ?

Just to let you know, i stopped going to my usual garage for fuel ( Shell station)

i also started used wynns diesel engine injector cleaner inside fuel, 2 bottles spread over a few months, and after a few months the light has gone, and so has the code...it has been ok now for a bout 6 months.

the cold engine revs have restored to 1200 rpm and controls down when normal temp reached...ie working as it should...hope it stays ok, maybe you guys can try this too.

POSTED THIS ALSO IN ANOTHER THREAD, but need help. :-)

Hello, this is my first contribution, and i have had the same issue with my avensis. One day while driving, it went into limp mode, and presented the fault code of large fuel leak. After changing injectors (800 quid), fuel pressure sensor, fuel pump, fuel filter, egr valve, cleaned out fuel tank for good measure, the problem was still present. What i tried one day, was disconnected the fuel TEMP sensor. The car now runs to full revs, but seems at slightly less power, but i suspect this is due to the engine light being on due to temp sensor disconnected. What puzzles me, is that the large fuel leak fault code is no longer presenting itself. BUT, if i plug the fuel temp sensor back in, the large fuel leak code reappears, and car runs in limp mode. I have changed the temp sensor, but this issue still occurs..... does anyone have any suggestions?
