Hi Barry and a warm welcome to the owner of the best RAV ever produced!!!!

A diff cover- not sure what you mean - a protection plate, or the actual diff casing??

Welcome to the club

Just wait for bothy looking in - he's probably using one to give milk to the cat.

Iam not to sure what it is exactly but when you like at the rear axle its bolted on with 8 bolts roughly and is around half the size of a piece of a4 paper!

Iam offshore at the moment so cant get any photos of it, i replaced a part like this on an another 4x4 and it was called a rear diff plate (cover).

I think all it does is keep the oil in and seal the back off the diff!

It is just to allow the final drive to be removed from the axle. Makes a good saucer for the cat or you could use the one off Bob King's for a security mirror because it shines!.

I think bothy will advise but he sleeps by day so will be here soon.

I'll have a look today when I'm under the car polishing the exhaust pipe. Just can't get my head round this one!

Sorry - I spent yesterday driving the landrover 50 miles - the first 10 was slow as I'd left it in the low gears selection = max 25mph. The remainder was done at 40mph but with frequent stops to add oil and gasp for fresh air. When I got back I was exhausted - noise+fumes+smoke

Thanks anchorman - I'd assumed it was a rear diff guard or something the same.

How on earth / why do you need this? Reversing at speed over boulders??? Thankfully I've never had a problem with the diff.

I'd guess you'll get one from one of the Jap breakers - I think there's one in Shotts. I've used Parts Gateway in the past and they are helpful - I don't think its a part that will be in high demand so its just a matter of sourcing a wrecked or scrapped RAV....the older ones that maybe have had a prang and its not economic to repair altho you'll end up buying the whole diff. While you are at it, get a new bush to mount the diff as these wear.

If all else fails, I think there are specialists about who can weld these casing back together. And then think about installing a steel plate to protect the diff for the next time you go surfing rocks

Now - you're going to embarrass me by telling us how it broke!!

Well, I don't live in Bothwell to save you coming down here to nick one!!

You are more likely to find one down south as the breakers there will probably have more RAVs than up here. You might also try some of the guys who import parts from Japan. And I guess the 1996 RAV sold in USA is the same as ours....I've bought suspension stuff for the 94 RAV from USA - you get the benefit of the exchange rate but watch as some places overcharge on shipping.

Is the original just cracked, or is it in 2 bits?? If its a crack, you might be as cheap getting it welded by a blacksmith - dya still have them up there in Montrose? From the diagram, its not load bearing altho I've not looked at mine yet.

Its a bit beyond repair but managed to get a second hand one for £45 so its not all bad considering a new one costs £125!

Thanks again for the help,

Baz.

well done. Need to avoid all those obstacles around your way - commandos; low flying fish; high flying sleeping policemen; and stop running over the many speed cameras there.
