Tyre Patches

Hi

I saw some tyres on eBay - duellers. The chap said he had changed them for snow tyres as the car is in france. He works in the city. However when I asked for more info about tread depth he said that they had been patched on the inside, but not by him as he hadnt long bought the car. Also he said he ha done 1000 miles on them, so no punctures / leaks.

Whats peoples opinion on the fact that they have been patched?

thanks

I suppose it depends what the patches are ? Pretty rose coloured material or handstitched might not be any great use other than for the garden.

Patched due to a puncture if done properly should be ok. However you need to balance that against the price new vs the tyre wear. And the fact that they have been put on and taken off a wheel-

1. when they were new

2. when it was removed to be repaired

3. when it was put back on after repair

4. when it was taken off again

5. when you fit them to your wheel

I use 'used' tyres for drag racing as it saves me screwing up my good tyres. However, altho they are almost bald, they will have only been fitted, removed and fitted to my wheel. Not sure how well a tyre bead stands up to being removed and refitted 5 times. Then you have the air-seal at the tyre bead to think about if its stretched at all. And lastly how old are the tyres - in number of years. Rubber does degrade especially if left outside.

I think when I had a couple of punctures on bike tyres repaired (motorbike, not pushbike!), they were done with plugs glued and pushed though the hole from the inside which worked well - and a sports bike tyre has to take a LOT more stress then a car tyre. I would think car tyres get fixed in same way?

Having said that, I would be very cautious on buying second hand tyres generally. I have bought them when they have come with wheels, but selling tyres on their own I don't like (just me as when I have bought used tyres way back in the past when strapped for cash, had 3 punctures in 2 weeks so guess that has put me off)

I wouldn't touch them.

When you are doing 70+ down the M4 how can you be sure one of these patches won't come undone?

Not worth the risk IMO.

I wouldn't touch them.

Agreed! Your safety, your families safety verses saving a few quid

God knows what abuse they've had.

Personally I would ban the sale of second-hand tyres!

Hmmmm

interesting.

I could get them fitted to the old mans Punto and he could have a blow-out when he's racing along in 2nd gear; and I could steal his fortune!
