I have Avensis diesel 03 and just clock 124 000 mi. Last week the managment light come on. I did take it to Mr. T for check. They said Fault code P0380 glow plug heater error which cost me £ 52.88 but it is nothing wrong with the car and they turned it off. In 2 days time it was back on. I went to Mr. T again for second check (free)- it was the same story, but they said they will talk to mechanics to see what it is the problem. On the next day mr. T did ring me and said that I have to leave the car with them for couple of hours maybe all day because they think it could be couple of things reason for the foult. I have been told good price for this service- instead of £90.00+VAT, £66.00( £75.00 with VAT)but they did not want to tell me what it is wrong exactley. So this will cost me at least £ 500.00 with no garantee if they'll fix it or not.

The car works perfect- starts normaly, no smoke, no strange noises. Could it be the plugs and if I change them should I go again to Toyota to turn the light off or it will turn off autoamticaly after the change or I could use local garage? Could it be something else? Shall I go to Mr. T or looking for cheaper local services? Is the car still works normaly even if the plugs are off?

Your error code can be glow plugs, ECM or wiring fault. But just going on description of your faullt ie: car still running fine. You may have one or two dead glow plugs. If you want to save some money & maybe have friend who might know a bit about cars, glow plugs are easy to check once removed. When really cold weather comes if you have dead glow plugs, you may have starting problems first thing in the morning. If you want to PM me i will tell you easy glow-plug check without use of pricey resisitance tool. Will leave it with you.

Sorry. Turning light off is straight forward, but if you have an underlying problem light will keep coming back on.

What is ECM? If you could advise me how to check the glow plugs that would be great. Are you saying the light will turn off automaticly if the pugs are the problem and I change them?

I had the same problem and replacing the glow plugs (at 60000 miles) resolved it.

hello

even one of the plug does not work -- you then will have starting problem but you state an opposite (???)

it means all of them work fine. it is better to screw them alll (all four) and test their ohmnedance that must be the same in all of four. In case you''ll see difer readings in one/two of them -- it is better to change them all four to forget this problem at lleast for 20-30k miles.

there might be another reason that due to the engine dirty you have a shortcut and the plugs are not being made red-hot + you have poor contact of feeding wire. as the alternative -- you can use another equivalent of the same plugs like Bosch or similar reliable. the plugs can be changed even by YOU in case you have got some socket wrenches.

cheers

Igor
