Dashboard Illumination

Having driven our Corolla now for the first time in twilight I think the dashboard illumination is quite confusing.

By that I mean with the car's lights off the dashboard is lit up as if the lights were on. I know there's a little tell tale on the dash board to let you see that the lights are on but coming from cars where the dash illuminates when you put the car's lights on the way this Corolla is designed is quite misleading.

Funnily enough when you do switch the car's lights on the dashboard illumination actually dims!

Thats done to stop the dashboard illumination from dazzling you at nightime :)

You could try this to see if the previous owner turned the dash lights down

Turn on your sidelights

Press your ODO button and cycle through until it displays some lines eg ====_

Then turning the ODO stick left and right makes the dash lights lighter or dimmer

Yes I can appreciate that it would be quite bright in the dark but what I'm saying is the way it works here seems to be the opposite to other cars I've owned consequently the "brighter without car lights on" makes you think that the car lights are on? I've confused myself now! (Doesn't take much!)

Dont think it can be done on the non-ts models guys i remember my t3 i couldnt do that when adjusting the odo. There were no lines there unlike the ts.

I found it quite cool but annoying at the same time! I always drive with my dimmers on in the t-sport because i love the dials! White background with red dials it looooks gorgeous!lol

Don't think it's limited to the T-Sport models. I can do this on my dad's 2006 1.6 Corolla Colour Collection.

The adjustment is also available on my T-Spirit.

As it happens the opticron dash lighting is something that I really like on my Corolla. Adds a nice touch when the black screen suddenly illuminates when you start up. Certainly don't find it confusing though I do agree that the automatic dimming is sometimes annoying when you need to put your lights on during the day and the dash dims too. When it does that, trying to fiddle with the ODO button as you are driving would be downright dangerous!

I found this confusing on my Verso when I first turned the lights on. Then realised you get 2 settings 1 for lights on and one for lights off. The display is still brighter with lights off but knowing you have to set the brightness twice helps.
