I have a 2000 Tundra 4X4 with 67,000 miles on it.

In the past, on a couple of occasions, I heard a "clunk" when shifting out of 4WD.

In the last two weeks, however, the "clunk" has become very loud, and there is a delay in disengaging the 4WD. The problem is very frequent, although some of the time the system works fine.

The dealership mis-diagnosed the problem as being in the front differential, tore it down, and found no problem....(!?*&*#!) They then test drove it, and the system performed OK.

Shortly thereafter, I noted that the problem was still there.

I am thinking there is a problem in the transfer case.

If anyone out there has had a similar problem, please let me know what the diagnosis was...I am nearing the end of my extended warranty, and really don't want to have to pay for the fix if I can help it.

Thanks, akwakw@redrivernet.com
