Yaris Coming With Cvt In 2009?

While deliberating buying a Yaris with MMT a dealer told me that next year Toyota are changing all auto gearboxes over to CVT. Now I know that the iQ is being launched with CVT and that Toyota already fits CVTs in Japan. Has anyone else heard this rumour and do you know when next year it will happen? Can't afford to wait 6 months for a new model but would hate to buy the last of a flawed line......

The forthcoming iQ will have the option of Toyota's new CVT called Multidrive. The 2009 Avensis petrols will also have the CVT option called Multidrive S and the diesels a six speed automatic.

IF successful logic should dictate that these could be applied eventually to Yaris, Auris etc. - hopefully banishing the rather unpleasant MMT transmissions ???????

In Japan, CVT has been available on:

Yaris (Vitz) since 2003 http://catalogue.carview.co.jp/toyota/vitz...3/equipment.asp and has been pretty much the only transmission on offer since 2005.

Auris since 2006 and is the only transmission option http://catalogue.carview.co.jp/toyota/auri...t/equipment.asp

This is a new "improved" CVT transmission with some impressive emission & mpg figures. The 1.0 petrol VVTi with Multimode in the iQ has CO2 emissions of 110g/kg and 60.1 mpg combined cycle. The new Avensis 1.8 petrol Valvematic with Multimode 2 has CO2 emissions of 157g/kg with 42.2 mpg combined cycle and the 2.0Ltr. version 164g/kg and 40.4mpg combined cycle.

It was interesting to note that Honda with their newly released version Jazz have gone in the opposite direction - their automatic was a CVT, now they are using their jerky MMT equivalent, the automated manual i-Shift. There again, Honda seem to have lost the plot, demonstrated by their current F1 efforts.
