Previa Temp Gauge

Hello All, Please help me........

Just brought a 94 Previa with 60K on the clock. My problem is When travelling normally the temp gauge sits at the half way mark, however when i come to a standstill it quickly goes into the red - but as soon as the car starts moving it resumes the half way mark. Have checked the water level which is ok, but sometimes when i park the car and step outside it smells hot!

Any ideas?

Sounds like your viscous coupling has gone bye bye and/or you rad is partially blocked. My money is on the fan. When moving you get an air flow through the rad which cools the car. When stationary if the fan is not turning the car will over heat. Its worth checking the water pump as well.
