Clutch Problem '91 Celica

Hi All,

I've been experiencing a problem with my clutch not rising up from a fully depressed position when I (for instance) take off from a light. I can raise it with my foot but it won't rise by itself. Once raised, I am able to shift up or down as required; but once I come to a stop and try and go again - usually I'm in first gear at the time, the clutch will hang up once more. I am able to move forward and shift through the gears once I raise the pedal. The same problem happens if I (for instance) come to a rolling stop and shift into reverse. I can put the tranny into reverse but then the clutch hangs up and though I am able to back up, the pedal stays down almost to the floor. Releasing it with my foot gets the pedal up to its usual position and I can then shift into first gear - as needed. I have also noticed that if I am stopped at a light, releasing the pedal by as little as a few centimetres causes the car to go forward - as though there is hardly any throw. It's like the clutch is completely engaged. Taking the tranny out of gear disengages the clutch and I'm good to go until the next light. Any thoughts or ideas?

My car is a 1991 Celica GTS with a 2.2L motor
