hello Teemasta

normally each new assembled engine consumes a bit of oil during a period of piston rings/liners lapping.

and the more milage the less oil consuming. wait for another answers on here (re consuming qty)

cheers/Igor

Firstly your very lucky not have wrecked the engine, typically an oil warning light means that its already to late. I don’t wish to preach but the oil should be checked weekly on any car to prevent this along with the other vital fluids + tyres lights etc as per the Highway Code. Now back to reality you need to check this things frequently!

It will say in your owners manual that 1 litre for every 600 miles driven is "Normal", this is basically the manufacturer saying if it uses lots of oil then its not our problem. New cars do use a bit of oil yes this is normal, also oil these days is so thin that it burns of easily and cleanly i.e. no smoke, this is another reason to check it frequently.

Call this a lucky escape, and a lesson learned, always check your oil :thumbsup:

as an additional: each engine has two alarms, as follows:

- low oil level----- means when the actual oil level (when engine is running) is below the MIN mark punched on the deepstick;

- low oil pressure----means you have either lost an oil or have another problems with sheel bearings; oil pump; filter clogging etc.

at first case --- you've got a normal warning signal to add oil ---- pay an attention to check oil very often at lapping period.

at this signal you have to add an oil very shortly to prevent engine damage.

do not be worried and be very careful in the future.

cheers

Igor

:thumbsup: Cheers all for your thoughts and advice..! :boxing: firstly in my defence of checking oil i usually do coz im a cab driver. its just in this case with the car being brand new i thought it would of bin a few more miles before i needed any at all. i had a Skoda from new for 18 months and that never needed any oil at all..! :yes: hence why i was surprised and was caught off guard a bit.! thats not to say iv lost faith or expectation in a Toyota, this is the first time iv owned or had a Toyota (and believe me iv had a few cars in my time) and i can probably speak for alot of people (my self included) that Toyota are 10 times a better make than VW owned Skoda or any other car iv had..! to add, since i issued this topic i spoke to my brother who has a new Honda, he says he's always putting oil in his car and he doesn't do half the miles i do so maybe certain jap type engines do use oil in regard to other makes i.e. Skoda..! :rolleyes: so yes i will be checking regluar now, again, cheers all for reply's and happy motoring....! :D
