Whiny Squeeky Noise

As per the title, my 46,000 mile 2004 d4-d rav has a sort of whiney squeeky noise that isn't very loud, but occurs intermittentley when the engine is running. It's been there for a while now, I even mentioned it when the car went in for it's last service, but nothing was said when I collected the car.

Any ideas?

Its strange I was about to post the same problem, back in March my Rav went in for a service and I told the dealer and he replaced the belts and it was fine. About 4 weeks ago its started again but it does it from cold and once I get moving down the road it stops. I would love to know if this is normal.

Sounds like the serpentine belt, not a big issue. Anchorman has a procedure to test it using hot water I believe,

if you hold off he may be able to advise later.

If you start it up and let it idle when it is producing the noise, get some warm water and trickle it over the serpentine drive belt. If it goes silent, don't worry about it too much, the belts become less supple with age. You could try a new belt but occasionaly it still does it a bit.

Try it and see what happens.

PS warm water will do no harm whatsoever and dries off the moving parts within seconds.

Cheers

There is a bulletin for the squeak/noise from the powersteering belt on the older RAV4.

On some the P/S pump isnt quite inline with the other things the belt runs.

The fix was to remove the pump, space it over with washers and refit.

Mart.

I'm unsure if this is the same problem as with my rav, but I also have a intermittent squeeking problem.

The sound can be explained as a low pitch sound, and not predictable. I've talked to my dealer, and they said that it was not the belts, and that they suspected one of the wheels to be making the noise. I'm taking the car to service early next year, so I'll ask them to have a closer look.

It might be the P/S pump as you say Mart. It's worth a try anyway.

Could well be what is happening with mine also.

I couldn't do the water trick however as mine only lasts for a couple of seconds

As I said in my message my belt was replaced and started making the same noise a few months later, is this a common problem and I cant believe that I need to replace agian. I understand they are not cheap.

Do the test. If it goes quiet ignore the noise. It is no harm.
