Anyone Driven Both The 1.6 And The 2.2?

I would be really interested to hear from anyone who has driven both the 1.6 petrol and a T180 or SR180. I drive the 1.6 but I have driven a T180 Avensis which impressed me as being quiet and very quick. Is the 2.2 in the Auris quiet and refined or noisy and harsh? Does the extra weight affect the handling? I will probably have a test drive next week to find out but would welcome comments.

i used to drive the 1.6 before changing it to the T180.

The difference is immense, the diesel is so much beter to drive and so effortless with 'on tap' performance when you need it in any gear.

Take one for a test drive, you wont be disappointed.

Thanks that sounds great. I will definitely take a test drive next week. Any thoughts over the advantages/disadvantages between a T180 and a SR180 ?

I drive a 1.6TR, and have done for 12 months, but recently I swapped into an SR180 for a week or so, you just cant compare the two engines, they are so different. The 1.6 is quite revvy and very quiet IMHO, but the 2.2 just purrs along at about 1400 revs at 50MPH. You need to drive both, they both have there qualities, both handle well, the torque from the 2.2 is just unreal, great car

Worlds apart - i had to drive a 1.6 TR for a weekend.

The 1.6 just drives thats it, there is not enough power in there for overtakes (even slow moving vechiles) and takes a while to get up to speed. Have to rev it A LOT. Funny thing is my t180 is a monster and returns better MPG.

However, t180 is more expensive but now a lot more affordable 2nd hand or ex-demo.

Thank you, I really appreciate your comments. I think I need to test drive the T180 but fear I will like it so much that I end up spending a fair amount changing!

Thats what i did!!!

Got a great deal out of the dealer though, we mashed some numbers around and i ended up paying £20 per month more than what i was paying for my 1.6 T-Spirit, all in all i was very happy. Saved loads already in fuel costs and tax, it's also over £200 a year cheaper to insure than what the 1.6 was, i couldnt believe it.

Thanks Kingo. The 2.2 sounds very tempting both as along distance cruiser down motorways at low rpm and with lots of torque for overtaking on A roads. I really will need to try one. The only thing that may put me off is the noise but your description of purring suggests that won't be a problem.

Gosh...that's interesting. I am expecting to take a big hit on insurance but maybe not. Thanks.

If your doing a lot of miles do take a look at the 2.0 model, it will give you 50mpg pretty easily on the m-way.

Its got quite a bit of power, enough to make for a comfortable drive. T180 is only different because the power just keeps on coming. However.... chip the 2.0 and it will make it very similar to the t180. Lots more power on the m-way or at higher speed. It will still give you 50mpg + if not better and the 2.0 is easier to chip... parts king has some chips.

However check insurance, it can add up to £80 which would possibly make it more expensive to insure than a t180.
