4.3 Xt5/t180 Sat Nav Traffic Announcement Volume

Has anybody ever managed to alter the pre-set RDS Traffic Announcement volume on the B9004 in the XT5/T180?

After trying a fair few different things, over a long period of time, I've come to the conclusion you can't. Does anybody know different?

Quote from the manual:

'When "TA" is received next time, the system compares the volume before "TA" is received and the memorized TA volume and automatically selects the louder volume. However, the range of volume memory is limited: if the volume received previously is less than the minimum, this volume will be used.'

Well that's clear then :unsure::lol:.

What I think it means is that if you twiddle the volume knob while a traffic announcement is active, it should remember that volume level and use it for the next traffic announcement. If you're currently listening at a higher volume than the memorized one, when it switches to the traffic announcement, then the volume level won't change.

This definitely used to work on my old 4.2 head unit (18302), but the 4.3 Sat Nav always seems to use a volume setting of about 18 for announcements regardless. Anybody got anything different?

On a slightly different tack, I've never really understood the logic behind Toyota's RDS implementation. With many other manufacturers head units if you press the TA button when an announcement is active, it will cancel the announcement. Toyota's implementation seems to sort of do this, but it also changes the TP/TA setting in the process in my experience, which seems a bit daft.

You can get something similar if you press then steering wheel "Mode" button, when listening to a disk, but if your listening to a different radio station, the best I've found is pressing the "FM" button. In my case it's usually pressing the FM1/2 button twice, to get back to the station I was on, before the announcement.

I know a lot of people hate the RDS announcements, but it has been helpful to me on the odd occasion and having the option of cancelling if it is not relevant, I find, for me, is the best way of using it. I know I've got RDS-TMC, but I prefer verbal, if I'm moving.

Both are only minor irritation really, just wondering if I'm missing something obvious (please not turning TP/TA off altogether :rolleyes:)? I must be doing something wrong with that volume :unsure:?

Apologies for the verbose post.

Cheers

  • 2 weeks later...

You've done rather better than me. If i'm listening to a radio station and press the TA button the radio immediately mutes. What am I doing wrong?

Look Good??? They've had over a week to respond to this one......bunch of no good wasters.....:lol:.

I know, I know, they are still trying to workout what I was on about. i.e. if you adjust the volume during a traffic announcement it should (with conditions) remember the volume level for next time, but it doesn't seem to. It worked on the 4.2 unit.

Never mind, stick to your milling and fettling :P.

Dave - I've replied in the other thread. Hopefully that will sort it, but shout if you've got more questions.

this is probably no use as a helpful reply, but reminded me why I fit my own radios and stuff now ...

Got an Alpine Head unit fitted about 20 odd years ago and everytime a Traffic Announcment came on, the radio muted and I had to turn the ignition off and on to get the radio working again!

Took it back to the SPECIALIST company - they took a look at the wiring and did the sucking through the teeth 'Who fitted this then?' line :rolleyes:

replied "YOU DID!" :yahoo::lol::yahoo::lol::yahoo:
