Help! 2001 Avensis 2.0 Cdx Auto Vvti - Problems! Code P0191

Hello Every1,

Please bear with me this is the first time i've posted on this webpage:

I am having nightmares with my 2001 Avensis 2.0 CDX Auto VVTi, it takes time to start up when cold or hours to restart when it just randomly cuts out (even if the engine is warm), it sometimes cuts out at idle and may not restart until it is jumped with another car. I took it to a local mechanic and he diagnosed it with his computer as having a fault code P0191 (fuel pressure sensor on the common rail). I replaced this sensor with a second hand one off a working car, but this does not seem to have cured the problem. Spark plugs are fine.

I am led to think perhaps the fuel pump is faulty or the fuel tank probably needs checking for any blockages??

can anyone please help who may have had the same probs or who knows about this fault as this car is really annoying me!

Many Thanks

Fas

hello FAS

your possible problems are, as follows:

- fine fuel filter clogging;

- air presence inside the fuel system;

- HP pump delivery valve leaky;

Thank you for your reply, is the HP pump the high pressure pump in the fuel tank? how can i cure the air inside the fuel system problems?

Cheers

OK -- HP pump is the injection pump driven by the timing gear and the same pump criates pressure before injeection thru fuel valves.

as to an air escaping -- both HO pump and fine filter have the same bolts on their bodies.

you'd better check with them. as to an air escaping -- this can be done easy:

- from fine fuel filter -- there a booster pump (hand driven) available before fine fuel filter: unscrew slightly an air escaping screw on the filter body and pump the handle unless you'll see no air bulbbes go from the filter -- then screw in this screw/bolt. as to HP pump -- turn ignition key in ON position to enable diesel inlet solenoid valve be opened and pump the same booster pump manually unless you'll see no air bulbbes escaping from the pump. after the same bolt/scre to be tighten.

cheers

Igor

PO191 is a diesel fault code, the vvti engine is not sensed on the fuel pressure by electronic measurement, only by a fuel pressure gauge.

rightly so, it is indeed a petrol, does that mean igor's advice will not be useful for me?

yes FAS

i have explained you re diesel engine having based on the code stated by you initially as (code P0191 (fuel pressure sensor on the common rail)

for sure -- it's necessary to check with delivery pressure from fuel pump inside the tank. As far as i know the lifetime of this unit assly (pump+filter+level gauge) is arround 150k-180k kms (divide on 1.6 = miles). may be this case is yours now.

in case your sparks are OK then i only see the problem connected with booster pump assly.

SORRY -- i presume the above will help.

cheers/Igor
