1.8 Vvti Engine Oil Issue - Please Help Me!

Dear All,

I would really appreciate your informed replies regarding an oil issue which I have with my 2001 1.8 vvti petrol Avensis. Its a lovely car which I have had from 12,000 / 1 year old but its burning more oil than ever!!

I have taken out the spark plugs and both cylinders 1 & 4 now clearly show burning of oil which I found on the inside thread of the spark plugs. The other 2 plugs are matt black around the base of electrode but no real oil on these 2 plugs-yet. Before it was just cylinder No. 4 which was causing oil to get on the spark plug and me to keep adding oil every week!

I am now putting in roughly half a cup to 2/3 of a cup of oil per week with mileage of around 100 per week approx. Car has done 67,000 which isnt much in my book and its hasnt been driven hard either.

My question is knowing about Toyotas duff 1.8 vvti engines what exactly could be the cause of the oil burning - valve seats? piston rings? block itself? I really want to keep the car but dont know the £££ figures that could be involved if it suddenly goes - !Removed! up :( Car is currently worth £1,500 or more PEx so was wondering if I need to get rid of it now before its worth ZERO!!

Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated as its giving me sleepless nights

much discussed and well known problem. Do a search OIL CONSUMPTION and read if you have a few hours to kill.

Possibly, a new engine will cost more than the car's worth I would expect.

The big thing is having service history, if thats all ok and it's using over 1 litre per 1000 miles, Mr T will sort it out F.O.C.

Had mine done a while back, new short motor at Mr T's expense.

The problem is with the piston design, Mr T's mistake, hence them rectifying the problem F.O.C. I am told that the oil control rings get stuck in the pistons and therefore do not work.

pretty sure if your car has full service history Toyota will extend the warranty for this engine problem to 7 years/112500

im not definate on the years/mileage but its definately extended.

took my Avensis for MOT yesterday, passed with flying colours except was told oil was down, then told about this VVTi consumption problem, surprised I'd not been told before as this is my third Toyota from this dealer in 8yrs, there having it in on Thursday to do this short block replacement, only done 35,000 hadn't noticed anything wrong apart from high oil drinking, car runs impecably hope they don't ***** it up. :(

Told warranty extended to 7yrs/112,00 miles after work has been done, any further info greatly appreciated.

Took my Avensis to local Toyota dealer and told them it was consuming oil like it was going out of fashion. They have replaced the short/block and I got car back just the other day. Over the moon about this as car is nearly 7 years old :D Many thanks to posters on here telling me about this 7 year warranty thing otherwise I wouldnt have bothered complaining!!!

THANK YOU!!!!! :D

Glad to hear you got sorted out ok. I had mine done a while back and it doesn't use a drop any more. Mr T does get things right on customer service sometimes and this is clearly one of those times. Good of them to hold their hands up and admit to a design ****-up.

Does anyone have a contact address/email address for informing Toyota of excessive oil consumtion?

Just take it to your local toyota dealer and tell them you aren't happy with the amount of oil it is using. They should then do an oil consumption test for you. (top it up to level and tell you to come back in 1000miles, or sooner if it gets very low before then)
