Hi, i am going to be buying my first celica at xmas time, and will be a 1.8ST 6th gen model. Direct line quoted me 670 per year, as me as a named driver on my dads policy (but still able to build up my own no claims). I have 1 years no claims and i am 19, does that quote sound reasonable?

that sounds very reasonable to me considering your age. you should probably take in to account when buying the car that if you get a japanese import the price is likely to go up.

That does sound like a good price but the trouble is, if it is your car, but your father is insuring it as his car, then that is fronting and is illegal. Are you going down as the main driver or just a named driver?

id be down as a named driver yet i can still build up my own no claims, as its a policy on direct line.

If i was the main driver, but was down as a named driver, how would anyone know? if i crashed it surely i could say dad usually drives it but i was driving it that day?

it may be worth giving direct line a ring and see how much it will cost to have you as the main driver (unless your dad is going to drive it more than you are) because i'm with direct line and without going into too much detail, i found it really cheap. (i'm only 18 and have an import). probably worth checking out so that your not flexing the law ;)

There a few thing to be careful with here.

Will any other insurers recognise your named driver experience as real no claims bonus... ?

The problem you would have is when you come to claim. If a claims assessor is sent out, he will look at many things, eg, does your father have his own car etc.. If an insurance assessor suspects foul play, you will be investigated further and it may result in your claim not being paid out.

I am not being negative for the sake of it, but these things are worth considering.

As above, why dont you try and get a policy in your own name?

other companys wont recognise it, but when i go onto my own name i will stay with direct line, who do recognise it.

Yes he does have another car..he has two hiluxs. I cant afford the insurance on my own policy unfortunately :(

This is one of those "worst case scenario" situations, thats unlikely to occur, however if you crashed the car and hit a very valuable vehicle the investigators would do there best to invalidate your insurance. For example knocking on your neighbours doors and asking who does the most driving etc etc.

Almost everybody has at some point done this, you just need to be aware of the potential risks. Thats why most 19yr olds drive Group 1-4 cars on their own policy or pay crazy money to have something more meaty.
