Dipstick (for Oil!)

Got a warning light on the dashboard saying oil maintenene required. There is 40K miles on the clock and last service was at 33K. Checked the oil (1st time as only got in March - 06 XT-4 Diesel) and noticed on the dipstick two areas that I though maybe used for indicating correct oil level.

First was near the bottom of the stick and was like two small studs about 30mm apart (oil level was within these two points), futher up the shaft twisted to give another area of about 40mm which could be used as an indicator. Basic question I know but which is the right one?

Is it the oil light itself or the Service reminder message on the display?

The oil/service display appeared on mine after i had done 20K i think it was due the service reminder clock not being reset when the last service was complete. The instructions for cancelling the message are in the manual. I think you have to press and hold the display button while switching the ignition on.

If in doubt get a longer dip stick

Thanks Bomber

Yes it is the oil/service display as it says"oil maintenence required now" going to reset it this evening. Guess if the oil level does drop too low that a specific/diiferent 'oil' light will appear!

I just used to feed the landrover with a gallon of engine oil at a time, and put the remainder into the dieselly tank!! If the sump was too full, it just blew it back out of the dipstick hole.

Its away getting another engine stuck in as 1s not enough
